By the way, what tees are you playing from? Your game may have bottomed out for awhile. That is quite an improvement and reflects the hard work you have done. I really think hybrids would give you a lot of confidence if you can play them. Ask to borrow a 5 hybrid and play it for a round. I suggest a Ping 410 to try out, and the right shaft is very important.

1. buy new set of irons

2. hdc goes up

3. go back to your old faithful but you've already started to change your swing. 

4. go back to new other iron set.

 

This is what I have done(maybe still doing) and it is the only factor why I cannot be a low single digit player. 

 

Oh, this equation applies to all of club categories in my bag. lol

Do a fitting and hit everything, the data and personal preference will tell you what you need.

Love hearing about mid handicap golfers wanting to get down to single figures rather than just being content with where they are. But the thought of new clubs to make you a better golfer needs to leave the mind.
 

Everyone has hit the nail on the head with working on technique and game rather than new clubs.

 

Firstly, you have to make sure you’re confident with your equipment. Now is the time to get the shafts, lie angles and lofts double checked so that you know every time you step up to the ball, that club is right for you. Go to someone you trust, whether that’s your local pro or driving range, stay away from superstores that are only interested in commission and the sale. 
 

Then it’s time to work on the game. Fortnightly lessons would be more than beneficial and along with that…purposeful practice.

 

Now you have to understand your game. Whether that’s lost tee shots, poor shots into the green leaving you in 3 putt territory or a bad touch from around the greens. Them weaknesses are what need to be worked on in practice to start breaking 80. Start making more pars and less double and triple bogeys.

I doubt you can improve on the AP1 unless the shafts don't suit you.  But if you want new irons for the fun of having something new and fun go for it.
