Should I shorten my driver/fairway shafts?

I have standard length shafts in my driver and fairway woods (5-/7-wood).  I'm left-handed and rarely hit to right-side trouble; my natural shot is a left-to-right draw. With driver I might start over the left side tree line and come back to the fairway. I control my draw by how much I hit to the inside of the ball (7-8 o'clock), or try to hit right behind it (9 o'clock) to minimize my draw.  My problem happens, routinely enough (1-of-4?) that my shots are more into the left side rough (nice shots, just left; I'd like to move them a bit more to the right, towards the fairway).  Most of these are nice shots, but just further left than I prefer.  I've choked down on the grip to alleviate that and it somewhat works (doesn't start as much left as it would using the full grip), but I don't like the feeling of choking down on the grip with the grip stub sticking out, and I'm thinking of shortening the driver/fairway shafts perhaps 0.5-0.75 inch (they are standard lengths). I'm thinking that with the full standard shaft length, the head is arriving a bit late at the ball and that's what's pushing it a bit further left than I'd like. Also, I'm using senior flex shafts for better distance, so that might be why as well, as the head is lagging back, arriving at the ball a bit later than my regular flex shafts?  And all of those shots are decent shots/patterns, but they are just a tad more left than I'd prefer.  Any suggestions?

I haven't touched my fairways but I took an inch off my driver shaft, but I also went heavier. It can really mess with the swing weight. I bought a shaft to play with ($25 on eBay) and it seems like it's helped, but I haven't retried a longer shaft in a while.

Only one way to find out...

I am also considering cutting off an inch on my driver and 3w this year.

I'm 6'2'' but I have long legs and arms so my preferred posture puts me a little closer to the ball and a little upright. Choking up on the 3w an inch makes it much easier to strike consistently. Driver isn't as big of a difference but it's easier to keep the club in front of me and to avoid getting stuck. My miss has always been a big overdraw/hook.

I play my driver to 45" and really never thought of messing with fairway woods.  Just remember that a half inch trim could be 3 points down on the swing weight. You can get a lighter grip, add some lead tape, etc if the new swing weight bothers you. Going past that half inch, you may want to add some weighting for sure.

Hard to say what the problem is without seeing your swing... however, sometimes its a matter of comfort / feel. As mentioned its a fairly affordable thing to try out... I am 6ft3 and my swing speed is in the 115mph range however my lengths in woods are:

44"Driver

42.5" Fairway

41.5" Hybrid

All my shafts are a bit heavier by I love the shorter shafts, I have much more control with them I feel. So experiment if you can. For swing weight if you do cut, trim from the butt end and either go heavier shaft of add some lead tape.

1/2" = 3 swing weight points (Shorter SW goes down)

2 gr club head weight = 1 swing weight point (Adding head weight increases SW)

5 gr grip = 1 swing weight point (Heavier grip - SW goes down)

9 gr shaft weight differences = 1 swing weight point (Heavier shaft - increases SW)

That said, you seem comfortable in lighter clubs so going into a C Swingweight possible wont have major impact... more on feel as the overall club weight wont change much.

Let us know how it goes.

I'm all in with the trimming to achieve better / more consistent ball strike crowd. Fairways make the game a lot more enjoyable than my occasional miraculous escape from the rough! Haven't played a Driver more than 44.5 in years and all other woods gapped accordingly. Will probably start off the year playing a 43.5 Driver. Swapped out 3 wood shaft into Driver and pleased with initial results. Also suggest you might want to consider researching a bit as there's tons of information available as to "correct" club length by Ralph Maltby and especially Tom Wishon. I think Wishon's explanations and rationale make a ton of sense. Enjoy the experiment!

I'm 6'1 and am a big fan of shorter woods and hybrids. Driver is 44.5.  Fairway wood is at 41.75. Both are swingweighted to D3. Really helps me center the strike, increase smash, and hit the ball further on average.

Yea, I can go heavier too (have Regular and Stiff versions with heavier weighted shafts and even though they keep my shots straighter, they're also shorter distance) 😬

I guess I'll start playing with shaft length and weighting.

If you're building a shorter length club from scratch, remember you can use shaft tip weights to help you get your desired swing weight.

I have a few driver 44 to 44.75 in setups and a combo of tip weights and moveable head weights gets me the result I want. Also heavier shafts if that suits.

I play a driver at 43.5 and a fairway around 41.

You can make anything work but it does take some experimentation.

Big believer in driver and fairway wood lengths shorter than is offered by most companies.  I've been playing driver at 43.5" or even 43" for a few years now.  3w is at 42", maybe 42.5".

I'm aided by my not gaining swingspeed going past 43.5", but even before learning that fact, I was playing a 44" driver with a 90g shaft.
