Rant: Why do companies marketing products to golfers hire models who have never touched a golf club?

This is probably true of all product segments, but I just find it infuriating that companies trying to sell stuff to golfers with marketing shots like the picture below.  This rolled across my IG feed this morning.  This is targeted marketing to people who have consumed significant golf content.  The first thing I notice when I looked at this ad was that these people have no idea about golf, and now I have a negative opinion of them knowing what golfers want.  This guy has never swung a golf club, this picture was taken at a goat track muni range, and they are trying to sell me $88 dollar shirts and $110 pants.

Like I said, this probably happens with tennis, fishing, biking, knitting, camping or any other specialty sport or hobby.  I can understand if this happens in a newspaper insert for a big box retailer like Target or Wal-Mart.  However if you are going to specifically target a segment, you need to at least have someone in that segment participate or review.

Am I being over critical, or does this bug anyone else?

Definitely being overly critical. I see these ads all the time and I've never once thought "this guy/gal doesn't know how to golf!"

Plus, how many startup or small market brands have the extra cash to spend on a professional golf model or to rent out an upscale course just for the sake of taking a few pics?

I am only 47 and i must be turning into a grumpy old man.  I was watching a First Tee commercial one time and one of the kids was holding an iron with a left-hand-low grip.  Annoyed me.  I need to move to a weed legal state.

Screenshot isn't coming through for me, but it's pretty common in almost every industry.  They hire models for a reason.  They either can't afford to get a golfer people care about to model their stuff, or they know that getting Doug from the range 7 beers deep isn't going to sell shirts either.

Maybe it's a strategy. Sounds like it caught your attention enough to click and see how much the pants were.

For a small company that's a W

But as others noted, small companies aren't hiring models based on their ability to golf but more how they look probably based on their fees.

I got one better. Anyone notice all the nerds and geeks Dicks got in that Hot List commercial. It’s amazing they could find that many. Makes you really trust those Hot Lists…like we ever did anyway.

All those guys are probably Wrxers.

I’m guilty of falling for the trap. I bought a Veylix Wildeye Rome shaft based on the models on their website…
