Bob Goalby who won the Masters after Roberto De Vicenzo incorrectly signed his scorecard. As a result of that a separate place to check and sign scorecard was implemented.

They moved the scorer’s table for the future but Roberto was in a hurry and careless - wasn’t the only time, but this one cost him for sure.

Both were good men, Goalby was involved in a lot of things he doesn’t seem to get much mention for that were good for golf.

I’m sure The Masters will be part of all the headlines, would have been nice to see a little more here.

Well moving the scorers table inside was a huge deal imo. No more distractions. As iBanesto's second photo shows. Was just a ridiculous set up, and it cost Roberto dearly. Yeah it is his fault for signing, just don't see that happening if done inside.

It's all hindsight and hard to blame his carelessness in basically glancing at it and tossing it aside (heck he did the same basic thing a few weeks later and somebody saved him) on distractions that were known and common, but I agree if they would have had foresight to have a different procedure maybe it would have turned out differently. But that's how it was done and he failed a pretty basic test after the round and it had very unfortunate consequences, wasn't his first tournament.

Goalby paid the price forever which is more unfortunate to me, and Aaron came out relatively unscathed, except . . . . . when Frank Beard published his autobiography a few thousand of the first copies had Aaron's picture on the cover, lol - I've got one in a tub somewhere in my basement!

Goalby did pay a terrible price, and for something that was not of his making.

Breaking form there theme here, whilst I could have told you Bob Goalby won The Masters, prior to the past couple of days I could not have told you that it was the year the RDV messed up. I mean, I must have heard it at some point in amongst the RDV story but it had never actually registered.

Shame that this seems to be his legacy - but lets be fair, everyone talks about RDV throwing it away but if he had signed for the correct score he was making a playoff and Goalby might well have won that as well.

While Goalby certainly made a number of contributions to the game, there was also a less-than-charitable side to him as well.  In Tony Jacklin's new bio, "My Ryder Cup Journey," the British pro emphasizes over and over again how Goalby, Gardner Dickinson and Don January were extremely vocal in their attempts to keep international players off the U.S. tour.  Years lataer, when it came time for Jacklin to take a shot at the Senior Tour, these same three, led by Goalby, advocated the same ban.  (For a U.S. Open and British Open champion, mind you!)  Such pettiness does nothing for his reputation.
