7iron Swing Speed what flex

NZ315

Recommended Posts

I just recently got fit for irons. My 7iron swing speed is about 89mph. Fitter said I was in between stiff and Xflex. I ended up with stiff.
When I was told I was in between both flex’s I told the fitter I think I should be more of a stiff rather than X. Did I shoot myself in the foot without trying the X flex?

I never even tried the X flex

If you are a smooth swinger, you should be fine with a stiff flex. If you have an aggressive transition and are more of a hitter, the x might be the better option. That being said, it's usually better that a shaft be a little too flexible versus too stiff for you. What shaft did you get fit into?

I was just fitted yesterday with the same swing speed and tried  stiff and X flexes in various brands and compared both flexes in the same brand- my swing speed went up slightly, dispersion down, carry distance up, and feel on full and partial shots was much better with more consistent center face contact with the X flex....and I am an old man who swings like an old woman. The weight and load/unload of the X flex works better for the way I have always swung the club, so it works better for me. I think it is more than just how much speed you generate, but how and where the speed is generated as it relates to the load on the shaft. I have found the Mizuno Optimizer to be spot-on with the top 3 recommendations all  being good choices in the 120-125g weight range and X flex (KBS Tour X, C-Taper 130, Project X LZ 6.5).

I was also fit with the Mizuno Optimizer the top shaft was the ProjectX LZ. The fitter said I was between the 6.0 &6.5. I chose the 6.0 just thought I would rather be in the less flex side. My regret is not even trying the 6.5

i do play x flex in my driver and woods

Only you can answer that.

I swing hard, and I have S300s.  To be fair, they came with my irons that I bought a couple years ago, but I like a bit softer feel in my irons.  I've been intrigued by trying something like an X100, but never have.

On the top side of my bag, I have a very stiff X Driver shaft, everything else is a stiffer S.

I really liked the LZ 6.5  I think it plays like the old Rifle/Precision Microtaper 6.5, not the Project X 6.5 which feels a good bit stiffer. I think it has more feel that the KBS Tour X or C-Taper X

Related to this, you want a shaft you can handle on days when you have your B swing. Shafts that only work for your A swing will hurt you.

Compared to most steel shafts, Project X is stiffer. DG S300 is stiff, but PX 6.0 is STIFF.

Realize that many players are more aggressive with their driver swing than their irons.

Unfortunately at this point the clubs are already ordered with Mizuno not sure when the Mizuno rep will be back. So if I did change the order it would be a blind pick with something I didn’t try. Not sure if that is my fault or the fitter for not putting that 6.5 shaft in an let me try since I was on the edge of stiff to x flex

I believe you are overthinking this.  A case of paralysis by analysis.  The real question is are you happy with the results of the fitting?  Were you getting the distance, launch angle, spin, and dispersion that you want out of the 6.0?  If so, enjoy your new clubs, and stop worrying about all this "what if" crap.  There's not a whole lot of difference between PX LZ 6.0 and 6.5, at least not enough that it will make you hit one of them sooo much better than the other.  If it's really keeping you up at night, go back to the fitter and see if you can hit the 6.5 and compare the numbers to the 6.0.  I doubt there will be much in it.  But if it will make you feel better about your purchase, go do it.

This BS never stops, there is NO standards for flex letters, all they tell you is whats stiffer or softer within the same shaft model series, so 2 different models cant be compared using flex labels. Those who does it simply no good as club fitters, so there aint no such thing as "in between S or X".

As noted, get the clubs and enjoy since it felt good and you swung well with them. I commented in a few other threads that a few weeks back I did an iron fitting for weight mostly, and tinkered with a few profiles. I had been gaming a S accra for the past few years, KBS FLT 120 as well, and tried a bunch of profiles across vendors.

Data ended up showing good dispersion and the best feel that *I had* in loading the shaft, being a simple DG 105 R300. R is just a letter.

Looking at the EI profile,  the 105 R300 has a bit more softness parts of the curve that I react better to. Its plenty 'stiff' to hit strait shots with. At the same time, i would not fall a part if handed a 105 S300 shaft instead either....so don't over think it. Handing me a 130G R or S DG on the other hand, is work. 😄
