hey what's going on guys looking for some input, over the last year I took my set of ping S57 irons out of play in favor of the PXG 0311t. has anyone switching from more of a blade club to pxg had issues with distance control?....im getting some crazy long distances out of those clubs. also what are your thoughts on Srixon ZX7 I understand they are made in Japan, does anyone play these?

That’s weird because PXG tested the best for consistent carry distance and ball speed.  Are you getting big differences from strike to similar strike?

So same ball every time and when I hit irons pure like for instance a pwedge… I can either go 150-165…. I found it odd because I had the clubs specifically built for me haven’t changed anything in my swing…. And it’s like that throughout the bag… I don’t know if it because the clubs are a multi piece forged construction or I’m just used to playing a more blade type iron

How stiff a shaft are you using?

I have a theory. I can’t prove it, but it is based on my own personal experience. Many of us play shafts that are far too stout for our swing. I “fit” into extra stiff shafts for years, even though I am a weekend golfer in my late 40s (albeit a decent player and a former athlete). The extra stiff shafts “fit” me because I tended to hit steeply down on the ball with my irons, which created a lot of distance-killing backspin. By hitting down on the ball, I was producing a lot of launch. The stouter shaft knocked off spin thereby increasing distance.

With today’s iron designs - especially in the players distance category - the head is designed with properties intended to drop that spin and create higher launch. In other words, the head is already doing what the extra stiff shaft was intended to do for me. When you combine the two, you are effectively creating the same high launch/low spin conditions desirable in a driver. The result is that perfect strikes go nuclear - just like in a driver.

I believe that the remedy is to play a softer or spinnier shaft. I actually dropped down to dynamic gold r300 about a year ago, and have been playing exceptional golf ever since.

I’ve never hit any PXG irons, but have had a combo set of Srixon ZX5/ZX7’s since the Fall and they have been excellent so far in terms of control, feel, and looks as well.

Most people who’ve hit them will tell you they’re surprisingly forgiving for a club head of their size, and the consistency even on mishits is pretty incredible, especially on toe hits and thinned shots.

I have owned every Generation of the PXG irons, 1 - 4 and currently have the G4 in the ST, T and P.

I have not witnessed the types of inconsistency that you are describing with my irons in any of the irons I have used.

Here is a testing by Billy Horschel with the Gen3 T irons (bottom rows) along with the first gen ST milled blades (middle rows) and at the top the prior Gen2 T irons.

The consistency in these tests is excellent especially the T vs the ST models.

While Horschel is next level amazing, I love seeing his numbers. Also, while the gains might be marginal, its cool to see the Gen 3 vs 2 comparison. Based on the results it appears the Gen 3s are a bit more efficient than Gen 2.

Gen 3's are awesome. Gen 4's are pretty much the same, obviously just a different weight set up.

I had a very compelling PXG fitting with the 0211ST against my ZX7s. Maybe consider those as an alternative to the T comparison. I went in thinking I'd do the T in the 5 and 6 and maybe the 7 but since I have a 4-iron equivalent hybrid I really like (818h2), I don't feel like hitting the 0211ST up through the 5 is unrealistic.

Granted I'm attracted to the price point, but the feedback from the ST was great. I felt the mishits without it being punishing, saw an appropriate drop in distance without it being crazy, and knew exactly what was happening and why.

The only way to diagnose it properly is to see the data on each of your shots, including and especially dynamic loft.

The P is decidedly more forgiving on mishits versus the ZX7 because of its hollow/filled construction, but that should make it more consistent on ball speed, not fluctuating wildly. If there is a varying spin issue, that would affect distances, and that also could be swing related. Or could be how you strike these clubs. You need the data to accurately sort it out.

Well guys than you all for the input, I ended up going to a local golf shop that one of the retirees works at I put my pxg 0311 p to the test with the same balls as the zx7 and came a way with more consistent numbers with the zx7, we both agree that when I was originally fitted for the pxg clubs the shafts were probably the wrong fit for me. include that with the fact that it was the first time I've ever really played a club thats not a more blade style with thinner soles led to a lot of my uneasiness. I ended up buying the zx7 with Nippon modus 120 shafts and can't wait it get out and play them

Glad you’re getting better results. Which shafts were in PXG set?

They had the kbs c-taper tour… I think they were just super light with a high kick point

Yeah, C-Tapers and Modus 120 are night and day different in my hands. Glad it worked out. There's also something to be said for winding up in the shaft that the OEM paired with the head. Some OEMs just list stock shafts based on whatever they get a deal on, but I suspect that Srixon has a very specific goal of pairing complementary shafts with their heads.
