Gaining more distance with technology, does this make sense to you?

Current state I have a 7 iron F7 Cobra iron  that I can hit about 145 - 150.  I want to be able to hit an 8 iron that distance so I was thinking maybe one length clubs so here is my analysis let me know if you think it makes sense.

Current set

7 iron is 37.25 length regular flex steel  145 - 150

8 iron is 36.75 130 - 140

9 iron 36.25 120 - 125

One Length King Cobra Forged Tech

7 iron 37.50   1 degree stronger, better head and .25 longer.  I am thinking 150 - 160

8 iron 37.50  140 - 150

9 iron 37.50 130 - 140

Both remaining regular flex steel D2

My main objective is to get a 150 club that I can hit with high loft and hold greens.  The more lofted the head the better for forgiveness and accuracy.  Let's be honest a 9 iron into a green from the candy cane is much more promising then a 7 iron.

Does this look right to you?

I'd ballpark that you'll gain 5 more yards for the 7 and 8 irons and 10 more yards with the 9 iron.  I agree that more loft equals more accuracy but I would think that this would be offset by the fact that those clubs will now be longer.  Your 9 iron would be longer than your current 7 iron, so I don't think it's safe to say that you'll have a large accuracy benefit because of the loft.  I think that the usual benefit with one-length clubs (or using 3/8 inch increments between clubs) is seen in the long irons, as the shorter length makes them easier to hit cleanly.

Yeah maybe faulty logic....

I was just trying to find a way to get my 8 iron 150.  I find myself in those distances a lot and going into those with 8 would be a heck of a lot easier and more beneficial than the 7 in theory.

Theres not alot of technology here.

If you hit a 30* 7 iron 145, and you want to hit an 8 iron 145, then I'd be looking for a 30* 8 iron.

If you want to hit an 8i 150, lessons is probably the better option than spending a bunch of money on One Length clubs that probably aren't going to achieve what you're looking to do.

Then put 1 inch extensions in your irons.

Yes. A longer club in theory can be swung faster, but that doesnt mean it will result in more ball speed or distance. If you are hitting a 30* iron 145 on a good strike then you likely have some swing flaws and power leaks, and adding length could be a detriment to your distance. Less centered contact, more fat and thin misses, and youll probably be too timid to swing the longer club hard anyway.

Your also not comparing apples to apples. The one length short irons are designed to compensate for the longer lengths for proper gapping. If you normally have 10 yards between 7 and 8, and all of a sudden you add 1/2 inch to the 8, your gap has shot down to 5 yards (in theory). So Cobra has a progessive center of gravity that moves up in the short irons for a lower flight and to limit the distance for gapping purposes. So the 8 is designed to still be 10 yards short of the 7.

If you want to keep your lofts/lengths the same but increase your distance with technology then you should be looking at player's distance irons. I.e. hollow body so that you can get more ball speed/distance for the same swing.

Cobra Forged Tec, TM P790, etc. are what you should be looking at.

Players distance and game improvement irons add distance with decreased lofts at the expense of spin so if the goal is to hold greens it would be better to look at player's cavity backs and forget about what number is stamped on the bottom.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.

As a 25, I'd recommend lesson, and then when you've got your swing a little more consistent, go get a fitting.  It's possible that a new set of irons and shafts can get you an extra club's worth of distance.  I gained about 10 yards on my irons, but despite going with a player's distance iron (P790), the lengths and lofts are the same as my old set (G25).  I'd say it's primarily due to an optimized shaft for my swing, and to a lesser degree, newer tech in the irons.

I second spending the money on lessons. It does not matter whether you hit an 8 or a 7 iron 145. You need to consistently hit each club and know what distance you hit it. Your handicap is 25, it looks like you have a decent set of clubs, assuming the flex is correct. A good instructor can evaluate your swing and clubs and help you develop consistency.

Do not worry about the number on the club. There is no extra reward for hitting an 8 iron over a 7 iron. Knowing how far you hit each club reliably is what matters.

Lessons. 150 with an 8 iron isn't unusual, especially with strong lofts, graphite shafts and lively balls. I was hitting my 8 iron 150 yards 40 years ago, without the benefit of any of those factors. As for hitting high and holding greens that's 90% technique, 10% club.
