Retailer Pricing - Scotty Cameron

So I found a Scotty Cameron Triple Black at an authorized retailer. It's brand new and they wanted $500 more than retail price for it. Is this allowed?

I mean to be fair they sold out instantly at retail price. The only reason you found one at a retailer is because they have added the same mark up flippers do. If it’s what you’re after I’d say support your local store instead of buying off a guy looking to make a buck. If you wanted one for retail you had to be on it when it dropped.

You can  always make them an offer between retail and what they’re asking. Worst  they can do is say no.

Yeah I know. I just thought it was a bit strange. Thought they might be held to retail prices from Titleist

The only thing they're held to is the minimum sales price. FWIW several retailers near me had the Champions Choice and Triple Black models for sale, and none of them were selling it for the actual retail price. They were all somewhere between $800-1,000.

Unfortunately, as long as people keep paying these ridiculous markups retailers will keep charging those high prices. MSRP on special release SC's are a thing of the past 🤣

I think it's kind of a bush league move. They're just contributing to a secondary market, imagine if retailers did this with Jordan's etc.....

They kinda do. Nike been raising price on Jordan’s to recapture some of the secondary pricing. Also, making limited quantities to keep demand high.

I honestly don't mind the concept of retailers charging what they want on limited scottys.  The reason being is whoever decides to buy it will likely end up actually using it.  Regarding retail priced retailers, If I had to guess 95% don't get used for 1 round or more by their original owner.

We don't actually know the "real" demand of these putters because flippers are only going to sell them for a healthy profit, otherwise they will just hold on to them.  Many "collectors" do this where they just sit on unused scottys until the market is super hot for them.

Don't get too worked up.  Just don't buy one.  You can have a boutique manufacture make you exactly what you want for less.  Of course if you are looking to use and resale for about the same or more, then keep doing you playa.

Let it sit and collect dust on their shelf, I've seen plenty of clubs at local golf shops do the same. They'll learn when no one wants to pay their prices.

Isn’t that what a capitalist business is supposed to do? Make money. As long as they’re meeting the minimum MSRP I don’t see the issue. I guess just take your business elsewhere. That’s what I’d do.

Bingo, we can largely thank Nike's scarcity marketing tactics for creating these secondary markets in the first place. At this point plenty of "Scotty enthusiasts" are not even golfers, just profiteers looking for more revenue streams

Why is it bush league? You want them to sell it for lower than it’s market value to please you?

Pretty much. When people simply buy and resale creating these secondary markets, people will gripe about it but generally accept it. But when a retailer who incurs all of the expenses of owning and operating a store front tries to dip into that market, it's outrageous for some reason.

These same people don't bat an eye when the same store is left with excessive inventory and forced to sell it well under MSRP or perhaps even at a loss.

How about sell it at retail, cause you're a retailer.

If someone offered to buy your house for 75% more than it's value would you take it, or would you say "nah that's okay you can just give me what it's worth"?

Yes, they are a retail store, but there is no reason they should lose out on money by selling something for what the manufacturer says it's worth instead of what the actual market says it's worth.

If you have an issue with what they are charging then you can put the blame on the consumer who is willing to pay that price. If people weren't buying it at that amount then they wouldn't be selling it for that amount.

So when there was a club shortage, why didn’t every retailer jack up the price of clubs?

A lot of them did, heck ping raised MSRP of the G425 driver mid cycle(previously unheard of). Used clubs prices sky rocketed, some going for brand new prices.

Have you checked car prices lately? 5-10k over MSRP is normal and used cars are going over their original sticker prices at dealer auctions.  Supply and demand 101.

You just proved my point. Ping raised the MSRP (likely due to increased labor and materials), you didn't see retailers increase the price of clubs to 1.5 times the msrp.

Again used clubs is a secondary market. Dealer auctions is again a secondary market.

lol. If secondary market prices are above MSRP, why can't the same concept not apply to new goods? That literally makes no sense. Market price is dictated by...the market!  An why are you still are clearly ignoring the definition of MSRP?

If you want the chance to buy limited scottys at  MSRP, feel free to open your own store and sell enough retail scottys such that they will allocate some of the limited models to you. Or patronize a store so much and buy so much merch from them, that they will give you a better deal (or join a high end private club where they aren't allowed to profit off members). This is how buying anything limited goes (any porsche with a GT badge, Rolex's, bourbons, etc). Griping about it on the internet will get you absolutely no where.

I'm not griping about in on the internet. I asked a question. I've bought plenty of stuff above msrp, but I was unsure if retailers were allowed to do it, based on their contracts. I know certain manufacturers don't allow their goods to be discounted beyond a certain percentage, I figured it would be the same for selling above MSRP. Thanks for economics less.

This sure sounds like griping on the internet to me.

Interesting to see Nike get blamed for a retail practice that has been common for centuries.
