Hosel cleaning wire brush durability/longevity?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any tricks for getting these little guys to last?  I put a fresh one in service yesterday and it reminded me how they start out so nice and do such a great job removing epoxy and cleaning hosel bores, but seems like by the time I'm through one or two sets of irons they're worn out--or at least their diameter has shrunken to the point where I have to do a lot of extra back-and-forthing with the drill.  They're obviously not that expensive, but if anyone has any life extending tips I'd love to hear them.  I'm using these, in a handheld electric drill, on a medium to high RPM setting:

They just don't last very long. No way to extend their usable life that I know of. I buy several at a time knowing that I will go through them pretty quickly.

Yeah, I suspect that's what the answer is.  Figured it wouldn't hurt to ask on the off chance someone's figured out something super clever.  Maybe we need to invent a tool to fix these other tools, haha

I've been using these lately that I get from eBay primarily because of price.

They are 3/8" and on a stem that makes them not as easy to use as the ones posted by the OP but considering the price and consumable nature of them, they have been acceptable for me.

Few tricks work for me:

1. Use them both forward and reverse - helps keep the bristles from flattening too quickly

2. Use needle nose pliers while spinning your drill to sort of clean the bristles. Lightly grip the bristles with the pliers and move the pliers up and down to sort of fluff them up again.

I have been using forward and reverse--forward into the hosel, reverse to come out.  Running them through needle nose pliers is a great tip, thanks for that.

The only time I ever use one is when I'm cleaning out an aluminum adaptor.  For anything else I use a dremel with a 1/4" grinding bit.  I buy them about 50 at a time from an industrial supplier (about .75¢ ea.) and that lasts me about 2-3 years depending on what I do - repair wise.  Since it's an abrasive bit, I use it on all sorts of stuff, not golf related.

Similar to this.

I also have a couple of these.  I just cut the handle off so I can put it in the chuck of a drill.  Works great for cleaning the inside of a shaft butt.

I use these brushes to clean the epoxy while it's hot.  They should NOT be used to final prep your hosel though.  For that, a sanding sleeve on a rotating mandrel is better.  Clean the hosel with MEK or Acetone, abrade the hosel, then clean again.

Grinding bit is a great idea.  I've got all sorts of little dremel attachments like that laying around, just never crossed my mind as I've always used those little wire brushes for the hosels.  A creature of habit!

Which dremel attachments work best for this since I run into the same issue with the wire brush?

None of them really.  The ones I use were from someone thinking outside of box (not my idea, but I ran with it) and wanted a bit that would fit in a Dremel, but also fit inside a hosel.  The ones Dremel sell are too expensive and either too small or too big.

Do you have a link to the ones you use?

Found a link to a supplier.  Don't know who these guys are, but this is what I order.  I'm sure there is a local company that uses similar sources.

Aluminium Oxide

Mounted Point

1/4" x 1/2" on a 1/8" Shaft

A38 abrasive grit

1/4" in diameter

1/2" is the abrasive length.

They likely don't stock them and order them in.  Last time I ordered 75 and they cost me .90¢ ea.  I got used to sourcing different stuff from weird places
