Who has the best “B” game on tour now?

Yuck

Recommended Posts

Almost anyone on tour can be competitive with their “A” game, but very few when they are off it.  At one time, Tiger could win with his “B” game.  With the parity that is out there now, that is unlikely.  But day in, day out, I would say Rahm has one of the best “B” games out there now.  His bad is just not very bad…

Who else is in the running for best “B” game.

I think its Rory and I think DeShampoo will get to the point where he starts winning close tournaments with his 'B' game and crushing the field when he's on.

Rahm and I don't even think it's a question. He constantly goes out and gets top 10s and top 5s with his B or even B- game.

When he's on his A game like at the Memorial nobody can touch him.

My inner sarcastic self says the answer is Charles Howell III, because he's always on his B game and rolls top-25s constantly.

Serious note, chalk up another vote for Rahm. Dude is a stud and I wouldn't be shocked to see him end up doing the Dustin Johnson and racking up wins every year for years.

Yeah it figures the one time he had his A game he gets yanked from the tourney due to Covid.

Rahm.

But McIlroy has a singular talent, particularly in Majors. Every time he's on-screen, he misses putts galore, short-sides greens with 9-irons and generally plays loose, clumsy golf, then stealthily slides into a top ten spot next to a bloke who's played solid golf all week long. His meh golf is really very good for getting onto the bottom rows of the first pages of leaderboards.

McIlroy has always had a knack for turning lemons into lemonade. In the 2014 PGA Championship, he even admitted he necked the 3 wood he hit into the 10th on Sunday (which gave him an eagle putt that he made) and won by a single stroke over Phil. I'd like to see more of Rory contending.

McIlroy in the Masters is like watching one of those BMW V8s that shut off four cylinders on a long motorway cruise. But in his case there's an ECU issue that prevents them turning back on when the Audis, Mercedes, and Porsches that are Spieth, Garcia and Reed start hoofing it in the next lane.

Rahm is above tour average in every category for the last 4 years.  Good luck findings a player that can lay claim to that, you can't.

Yeah, a lot of truth to that; I think there are two sides. Firstly he has more shots covered than most even when he's not contending, so they're showing his poor shots along with his good shots. Some of the other guys only have their highlight shots shown so it looks like they're only hitting good shots.

The other thing is that having watched a lot of Rory play, I think his course management isn't much better than the average amateur. I would love to see Scott Fawcett caddie for Rory just one tournament. I would expect contention if not a victory if Rory has his B game and total obliteration if he has his A game.

How do we actually know when someone is playing with their B game?

what about C game?

just saying this is almost impossible to quantify.

the more realistic question is, who is the most consistently good enough to win or finish in the top 10 (no matter what letter grade their game is)?

Doesn’t really matter what grade they are playing at. Then I could say, why don’t they have their A game more often??

it’s just about results.

Justin Thomas

I would agree Justins “A” game is very good, but he misses 40% more cuts and is out of the top 25 50% more often than Rahm since 2018. This makes me think his “B” game is not the best.

That being said, JT did not bring his “B” game this week and has a very good chance to win.

As a massive JT fan, I have to agree with that. He can grind out decent results when he is not on but not on the level of Rahm. That said, he seems to be capable of flipping the switch and going from his B or C game to his A game very quickly.

That's why we like him.  When he is in the mix he converts.  The Matt Kuchar of the worlds are boring.  I like guys who have exceptional skills relative to the league who can pull of massive victories.

It could be said JT didn't have his A game at the players last year, hitting low 5 wood draws and he still brought home the trophy.  While statistically he isn't close to Rahm this year he is pretty damn good.

The low 5 wood draws are just shots that he has! Admittedly, the last one very nearly caused him a huge problem but he seems to have more tools in the bag than most of the other guys out there. He also seems to think his way around the course more than others. The execution is not always there but he golfs his ball more than some of the other young ones but I suspect that comes from Tiger telling him that he didn’t have enough shots.

Oh I know I play the Stadium course quite a bit.  I've been in the drink quite a bit, what would you except from a 25 handicap 🙂

Oh even though I play the white tees on 17 I always place the tips.  They flick wedges in there and I hit a 7 or 8 iron LMAO.  But generally hold the green and get pars.  Some days its the only hole I par!  That and 12.

I want to say Rahm too.  But to be honest. Saying Rahm may win 30.   That made me chuckle.  30 is great from one lense.  But from  another it’s sad.  We may never see actual greatness again …. Because of that , Isn’t it tiger ?  He’s maybe on C+ game -maybe , and if was healthy would compete often to win.

nobody wants to hear it. But isn’t it true ?

need evidence?  Look at the pga vs brooks …. That was C+ tiger woods.  And he made us believe that he’d win the whole way. Brooks had to stick 4 irons from 225 plus to beat him.

I mean this basically boils down to who rarely plays bad.  Who can grind out a decent finisb.  So Leishman has to be way up there. Same w Justin Thomas.  Maybe Ryan Palmer. Sungjae Im.

i see Rory as just the opposite.  He is on or off. Like Justin rose.  Adam Scott. And a number of others.  It’s hard on tour to have a bad week and still finish top 15
