I have a 48" ruler but it's hard to get an exact measurement. What are some other good rulers for $100 or under?

Is this a good option:

Thanks! How does lie angle influence length? Since that angle is preset (i'd assume to 60 degrees). If I have an iron more upright i'd imagine it may measure shorter than it is, and the other way if its flatter.

I believe it might influence it about 1/8"  i'm not sure.

It only hurts once, except golf it hurts a lifetime

That's pretty close for a 2* adjustment. I measured length before and after I got my irons bent flat by 2* and it was just a little under 1/8" longer.

since you already have the ruler, get this.  it also is sweet cause you can use it for finding balance points and manually finding swingweight.

I bought one of these just because, but the length measurement doesn't match my Mitchell.  I've got to study it more closely but for now, I'd say buyer beware...

Does it return a longer play length value than the Mitchell ruler?

Yes.  A good bit.

I've used the Mitchell to measure OEM clubs and it's always pretty much correct to the stated length.

I’ve used a couple of different rulers and methods and I think the Mitchell is the most consistent. I wouldn’t worry about the the lie, if you are using a constant measuring tool all the clubs will come out proportionally.
The PXG stores also use the Mitchell ruler as their preferred method.

Looking at the underside of the plate on my Mitchell, the ruler stops 5/8” short of the pins. That one looks like the ruler stops 1” short of the equivalent of the pins. That would make it measure 3/8” longer than a Mitchell.

Compared to the Mitchell this 3D printed jobby measures my 3 iron about .25 longer and the 9 iron measures about .125 long.  Not as bad as I first thought.

Photos show 6 iron

So on further review, I'm giving this ruler thing a thumbs UP.

For all I know, it may be more technically accurate than the Mitchell.

3D printed: $40 all in w/ruler purchase

Mitchell: $120 all in with shipping & tax

BTW, if anyone wants this 3D printed jobby PM me.  I bought it just to see how it works.

I'll give another endorsement to this device. It works very well. I butt it up against the wall to ensure nothing moves when setting the club head in it and I've been very pleased with the results. You can get it a good bit cheaper off of his website and Etsy store versus his ebay listing. Just make sure you buy the 2" wide yard ruler to use with it. The one I originally had wasn't wide enough to fit snuggly and moved around a lot.

I recommend the Hireko ruler and sole plate. Can also double as a swing weight scale. Just need a gram scale and a website for computations.

https://www.hirekogolf.com/dynacraft-bench-ruler-soleplate-kit.html

It looks like there's some imprecision in that if you move the club slightly to the left or right (while still keeping it perfectly parallel to the ruler), the length will change.  Has this proven to be a problem?

I've been using a "hillbilly engineered" ruler.  Clamp a piece of wood to your bench at a 60* angle.  Butt the 48+ ruler to the corner of the wood (no need to attach the two).  Done. $6.

That's how I started as well.  The next step was to make a triangular block with a 60* cut in it so I didn't have to keep measuring out the angle when clamping the block to the work bench.

Here is another attachment to use with a 48" ruler

Dynacraft Bench Ruler Soleplate

I've used the Hireko chart on a wall, but transferring a mark on the shaft is not the easiest and accuracy for some detail oriented golfers may be an issue.

I haven't purchased the soleplate myself to give a user review.

From looking at them it looks like you could get different measurements, it appears the Mitchell uses the 60 degree standard lie angle for all clubs, with the Maltby you can adjust the lie angle of the sole plate to match your club lie angle. I've always measured length using my actual clubs lie angle, it can make a noticeable difference if you play with upright lie angles, especially in your wedges. My Ping wedges are 3 degrees upright so the lie angle is ~68 degrees. If I measure the length using the 60 degree standard it comes up ~3/8" shorter than when I measure length using the actual lie angle.

Thanks for pointing that out appreciate the information. I also noticed both measure from the center point of the shaft and not the back of the shaft like the new usga standard does. I actually found this on Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/listing/1483828848/golf-club-ruler?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=golf+club+ruler&ref=sc_gallery-1-1&frs=1&plkey=6603b1d3adfb85f4368b62ad293a6297a9beb66e%3A1483828848) spoke with the seller and am going to give this a try first before spending $150+ on the two I linked above. Compare the measurements with the clubs I have. Will report back what I find.

For precise USGA confirming measurements, a 60* lie angle on the sold plate must be used.  They only time this will be an issue for USGA specs is with drivers and putters, they are the only two clubs that I know would possibly exceed limits.
