Wilmington Country Clubs

Cousin

Recommended Posts

I may be relocating to Wilmington, and wanted to get some recent feedback on clubs in the area.  I have looked on the forum and it looks like most info/comments are pretty old, so hoping for some more recent experience.  I have never been a CC member, but at this point in my life it could be the right fit.  Probably looking for more amenities for the wife and family rather than just golf unless the price is really good.  I am assuming that rules out Eagle Point. I know of Landfall, CFCC, Cape Fear National (but I think you need to be a resident to be a "member"?).

Does anyone have any comments on any of the clubs?  Good/Bad/Wait lists?

Thanks!

Porter’s Neck is a Fazio course, and I have never played there, but friends I trust have a lot of good to say about it. It is part of McConnell Golf, which  will give you access to a lot of really good courses in NC,SC, and a couple in Va.

Landfall has great facilities - Pool, Tennis, Pickleball, Gym, food, staff all 1st rate.  Golf is very good, 45 holes, 2 excellent driving ranges...

I do believe there is a waiting list now - played with a member yesterday who joined just pre-covid and no waitlist at that time, but everything in golf has blown up since and he says now a 5yr wait???

5 years ouch. Thanks for the input. Looking at things I think Landfall would be a better fit than CFCC. If the move happens I will be reaching out to them for more info. Thanks!

Cousin, just reading this posted.  Did you end up in Wilmington?  Interested what course you settled on. My favorite from your list is Cape Fear Country Club. I’m a fan of traditional Ross tracks and its a fine example of one.  I live in Wilmington feel free to IM me if you’re looking for folks to play with.

I lived in Wilmington for a year and checked out a few clubs. Was not impressed with Porter's Neck - golf course was ok, and the members were on the older side. I never got to check out Cape Fear CC but from what I've heard it is great and has the total package - and prob the one I would've wanted to join if I stayed.

Sorry for the late reply to the posts. Life got busy. I’m moving to Wilmington in a few weeks, looking like Porters Neck. Checked out the club there on a visit. Based on the last 6 months of life and a new job, not sure I would be doing a golf membership!  Unfortunately the kids just take too much time and I wouldn’t get the use out of the golf membership that would justify it. May still join a club for the family aspect and play golf at guest rates when I can get away. Right now we will focus on getting settled and look at various clubs in due time.

Would love to meet some people and play some when the weather allows!  Will hit you up miles.

Looking forward to it someday, reach out when you’re frisky.  Porters Neck is under new ownerships. I have not played since they took over.  It’s a solid Fazio track, I have enjoyed playing in the past.  oddly I played Cape Fear CC yesterday, such a great track.  Heading up to Pinehurst this morning, I have friends down from Maine, my home, for the week. Playing 4 and Legacy while we’re out there and back to Wilmington for the rest of the golf while they’re here.

We might be going down to check out Compass Pointe in Leland. Does anyone have any info on the course and area?

It's away from congestion.  Drive from Leland/17 a couple miles up Rt 140 or from Rt 40, drive down 140.

The course is only about 5 years old and in a new development.
I played it 4 years ago and I think it's private now.
It's a nice course, but does have housing on it.

Is it a walkable course, or is it too spread out through the real estate development?

I don't remember too many long stretches between holes. It's a fairly flat piece of property which helps it be more walkable too. I think the 18th green might be the highest point on the course.
