A nice reminder that the prettiest swing doesn't always translate to performance.

There are several KLPGA members that are not playing competitively anymore that I follow on Instagram that have amazing looking swings. Technically correct, super smooth, and effortless power.

It’s such a shame that she has been in such a bad slump since her father-in-law died during the 2020 Women’s Open.

I agree that Amy Olson's swing is visual lovely, but she has had some issues with its effectiveness and consistency.

 

How so, her swing looks almost perfect - right?

 

Well, maybe not quite. If you watch the clip posted above, pay attention to her sequencing, esp her upper and lower body sync. In this clip, she doesn't start down with her lower body first, it is at the same time as her upper body. That creates a fine margin of error and I have seen her sometimes starting down first with her upper body and coming slightly over the top leading to pulls and pushes.

 

Even when she starts down with upper body in unison with lower or even lower body first, she sometimes doesn't rotate her lower body well enough and so gets her hands caught behind her body which again can cause some ball striking inconsistency.

 

Have a look at this analysis for some more detail:

 

If you compare her swing to Jess Korda's - a player of similar athleticism and build, you will see how much better Jess starts down with her lower body:

 

Here's an analysis of Jess' swing by the same guy (Mike Wilson) who did the Amy clip I posted above, just so we have some analytical consistency:

 

I admire Jess' swing very much.

 

Amy has wonderful natural talent as noted at the US team squad's pre Solheim cup bootcamp last year when one participant said that Amy is a freak of sporting talent and won all their team-building sports games such as ping pong. She won 20 NCAA college tournaments (20!), simply phenomenal.

 

When Amy has everything sequenced and synced she is wonderfully accurate with her ball-striking and can play winning golf but if she is slightly off as can happen with her swing, then we don't see the best of her.

 

The margins are so fine at this elite level, so many players can win any week, including Amy.
