2022 JTBC Classic (Mar 24 - 27)

Was a great day to watch golf.  Friday should be nice as well.  Walking the course is well worth the price of admission.  Wasn't thrilled about the lack of food at lunchtime, the QR code for pairings instead of paper sheets, the bar at the 16th green not there, and the missing grandstands at the first tee box.  The entrance location for the event has changed, it is right by the public parking lot on Kingfisher.  Great to see local Alana Uriell have a decent round.  Hope she keeps it up.

Leona  M. off to a good start, keep and eye on her, does seem like her type of track.  See if she can be the 1st to 2 wins,

I just realised that these are poa greens, making putting more variable, particularly for the afternoon players (I hate them). As that neutralises one of  Leona's strengths, I'm winding back by half my prediction about her this week.

Got nothing to do with JYK's likely trouncing of everyone as you have pointed out, I'm blaming the greens😂

Jillian Hollis is the "Woman of the Hour"!  The perpetual DFL player during most of 2021 is -2 and T27; she hit 16 greens and 10 fairways.

Nanna Koerstz Madsen shot an unusual -6; she hit only 4 fairways and 12 greens, but made it up with 25 putts.

The course was unkind to rookies who played there for the first time:

Pauline Roussin-Bouchard                                      E

Stephanie Kyriacou                                                 +1

Hee Jeong Lim                                                        +1

Not so much the course as the 18th hole for Rouning Yin

@18majors
How about the LPGA rookies near the top of leaderboard

eg Hye-Jin Choi and Na-Rin An

(ie I hadn’t checked if they’ve played this course previously… you might know for sure?)

… but nevertheless doing very decently?

can’t remember for sure… but was one of these rookies nicknamed “the Robot 🤖 “ (or something similar) for the repeatability of her golf swing? 🏌️♀️

Na-Rin An bio:

Hye-Jin Choi bio: https://www.lpga.com/players/hye-jin-choi/98598/bio#playerTabOptions_top

You seem to have conveniently left off your list the “rookies who played there for the first time” who are under par.

Ariya and Angel Yin have to team up for the DOW Team event, their scorecards would be magnificent, nothing but Eagles and Double Bogeys.  They could also have a -10 round or a +10 round, nobody really knows lol

Probably even out to a par round, then🤣

Pauline Roussin-Bouchard had a snowman at par 4 #13 and shot +3 today for +3 total; she'll miss her first cut as a LPGA member.

I've been very impressed by Pauline, she's been carrying her own weight.  Afterall, she's a rookie fresh out of college; unlike Jeeno, Cyborg, Ayaka or Hinako, who are battled proven.

She'll still qualify for the Chevron next week; nice to have two extra practice days!

Danielle Kang, arguably the second best player this year, struggled and shot her second +2 over par round of the season.

I'm sure Danielle will recover over the weekend, but this highlighted the feat Jin Young has achieved.  To shoot 16 consecutive rounds in the 60's and 31 consecutive rounds under par is just out of this world!

Nanna has a nice little run going. Seven straight rounds of 67 or better.

I wouldn't be shocked if Leona was assessed a penalty for an illegal drop. No way that was knee high.

Jin Young leaking as little oil. Even par after 9 holes, and a swing that looks a bit off.

Bianca . . . a good effort trying to make the cut.  That Bogey on 16 hurts as she was on the cut at "Even Par" . . . It would be nice to see her pick up a birdie to make it.   I believe this is her first time playing in Carlsbad too (the JTBC event).

Nanna playing with some confidence.  She's in the zone . . . we'll see how long she can ride it!  But it must feel pretty good to be heading into a major next week with some confidence and some form.    Even if she doesn't win, she should have a shot at playing for some big prize money with a T-10 or T-20 finish (comparatively speaking).

Watching some of the putts (zoomed in), and a few chips, you'd swear the greens are trampolines. That poa is nasty.

Looks like Jin Young's streak of sub-70 rounds is coming to an end. One under for the day teeing off on her final hole.

She just ran her drive on the 18th into the rough, and may have a tough time making par, and keeping her under par streak going. Edit: Nice shot out of the rough, as a stress free two putt for par to keep type streak going.

She Lips out the 17th (a literal U) on the birdie putt and that’s all folks 🥲… first 3 holes were inches (one literally an inch for birdies) but none went in… such is the break(s) of golf… it is what it is... onwards to the next tournament whenever that’ll be. Fought the good fight but falls short of playing next week.

It is scary when shooting 71 can be considered a very poor round for Ko.

I wonder what her handicap would be for the last 6 months. May be +8?

Leona drove the ball terribly (5/14 fairways hit) and her approaches were a mixed bag. Big let down from how she had been playing.

Fortunately she can putt: 26 for the round, very good for poa.

Definitely off the boil but a 70 in those circumstances is about as good as she could score with the game that she brought. Hard to believe that she is still T9 and actually improved her position from R1.

Grouping her with Jessica and Charley for R3 will really show up sub-standard driving, particularly regarding length.

Luckily I didn't predict her playing well this week😂

Sei Young's season is off to a rough start to say the least. A 48th and a missed cut this week. 'Odd. Strangely enough her last missed cut was at this tournament last year.

I watched the streaming coverage for the pat few days. The crew needs to remember that the mic is hot for a few seconds before and after the transition to the "commercial break". Nothing controversial was said, but there were a few odd moments in the booth.

Interesting.

Must say though that it is nice to have the band back together (sans Judy), this commentary team works to my liking.

Looks like Morgan is the new Judy?

Nanna Koerstz Madsen; no lemon, more victories:

European tour pro has given up sucking on lemons in effort to be less sour on the course

“I don’t have the lemons anymore,” she said. “I talk a lot to Nicki [Hansen], my caddie. But in the end he’s always, like, ‘I can’t help you. It’s you who has to get out of this situation.' … I just try to say it doesn’t help me [to get mad]. I’ve done it a lot. I’ve ruined a lot of rounds for myself getting too angry on the course, so just saying it doesn’t help."

I suspect that she plays it because of the sponsorship by Korean companies . . . Kia previously and now JTBC.
