What's the best course you've played

Recommended Posts

That nobody has ever heard of
We have lots of members who have played the great famous courses of the world. What I want to know is what are some of the hidden gems out there.

One of my favorite courses is the Country Club of York in York, PA. It is a beautiful, mature Donald Ross design on a spectacular piece of land. It hosted the USGA Junior a few years ago, however, it keeps a very low profile.

Paako-Ridge in Albuquerque on the backside of the Sandia Mountains doesn't get a lot of mention, but is a beautiful, well thought out course IMHO.

The Isalnd near Dublin is a brilliant course but hasn't got the publicity that the likes of Portomarnock etc have had. It was truly memorable experience.

Tuhaye is a private club near Park City, Utah. O'Meara design with about 40 members. I am an assistant pro in Salt Lake and got to play it this autumn. WOW! What a course. My boss and I were the first people to play the course in 4 days. It was a monster, 7800 from the tips, 6 par 4's were longer than 470. It was so much fun and such a beautiful course. It is right next to the Jordanelle reservoir on the opposite side from Deer Valley Ski Resort. Most people in Utah have never even heard of it, much less played it.

Myopia Hunt Golf Club, about 30 minutes from my house. they played like 3 or 4 of the first 10 US Opens here. It's golf at it's finest. Deep pot bunkers like you fine in Scotland and Ireland. Small greens that roll like you wouldn't believe.

Wow! You know the bunkers are deep when they have stairs for you to get out haha!

Probably not the best course I've played but definitely the most scenic is this little gem located in Camino CA:

I love Apple Mtn. also, but it's a bit quirky.

Keep me in mind when you need a fourth there next season and for any other private courses!

:)

I did play Jeremy Ranch for the first time this season. I had been wanting to play it for several years since I moved here. Nice course...very nice...got a few great pics. I played in a UGA two man scramble tournament early in the season.

ForeonRoad,

Nice! I love Jeremy Ranch, my dad is a member there and I love that course. If you have any chance to get on at Promontory or Tuhaye do what you have to do. Glenwild is nice too, but Promontory and Tuhaye are hands down the most unbelievable golf courses I've ever played. The back nine at Promontory is amazing, I can't wait for them to build their next 18... I hear that it's gonna be like 8300 from the tips!

Didn't realize there are so many Tennessee golfers here... some fav's from there include:

Nicklaus Bear Trace Courses-

Harrison Bay: Chattanooga

Cumberland Mtn: Crossville

Tims Ford: Winchester

Black Creek GC Chattanooga- Site of Nationwide tour stop

The Legends: Nashville

Opryland: Nashville

For me (living just outside of Knoxville) I would have to say the best course I have playued around home is Holston Hills Country Club. Donald Ross designed....great layout.

Agreed...

I played in the Donald Ross Invitational with one of the members there this summer. Some of the best stretches of holes around. 5 thru 8 and 12 thru 15 are fabulous. 12 is by far the best hole on the golf course...

Wowed everyone by driving it left of the tree and on the green 4 out of 5 times on #2. Actually drove it on #6 green the one time that I missed the green...

One of my three favorites in TN. Spring Creek Ranch, Colonial South and Holston Hills are the three best...

I will nominate Elkhorn Valley east of Salem Oregon. This course was designed and constructed all by the hands of one person the owner Don Cutler. The front nine took 18 years to build and was the #1 9 hole course in the USA untill the back was done. The back nine took 15 years to build and Mr. Cutler died during construction of the 16th hole. The 17th and 18th holes were designed by his son (and not quite the same quality as the first 16) The coruse is 100% natural and amazingly beautifull. The par 3s are as good as any set of par 3s anywhere.
