Best golf courses near Kansas City

I'm heading down to KC in a couple of weeks with my wife. She has conferences for a couple of the days we are there, so I have at least 1-1.5 days completely free. So I want to get some golf in! Any recommendations for public courses I should try and play? I am ok driving a ways to get to a really nice course, so it doesn't have to be in Kansas City necessarily.  Thanks for any help/recommendations!

Lived in KC from 2007 - 2013…. Awesome town, and truly do miss it. With that said, here’s the best I have from my recollection :

 

- Sycamore Ridge (Spring Hill, KS - Southwest of the metro) …. Tough front 9 carved thru heavily wooded area and more of an open links style back 9

 

- Tiffany Greens (North Kansas City, MO - up by the airport). …. Nice track, originally built to be private, and host tournaments. 
 

- Shoal Creek (Kansas City, MO - north of the metro) - a newer course, with more modern layout / setup. One of my favorites 

 

- Ironhorse (Leawood, KS - south of the metro) - lots of elevation changes and tricky tee shots. A ball strikers golf course and really fun from back tees 

 

- Dubs Dread (Piper, KS - West of metro) - one of the older courses in the Midwest but has stood up thru the years. Lots of big trees and doglegs. Not overly challenging but still fun 

 

Just depends where you are staying but there’s plenty of good offerings around the metro …. Depending on weather, crowds and slammed tee times is what your biggest challenge(s) will be. Enjoy!

Thank you for the list! I'm looking into them now. Also trying to decide if I should make the trip out to Firekeeper since I will have a full day to play. My only concern is that it wouldn't be worth the long drive to play there if the course is still in winter condition.

It’s a nice track ; no doubt, although I don’t think it’s THAT great. I wouldn’t drive out there, just to play golf there, even when the conditions are good …. But that’s just me. There’s enough other quality courses in the metro

I hope the weather cooperates as of course Kansas weather is usually pretty moody at this time of year.  I live in the area but my suggestions would be: 

 

Public Courses (In Order): 

1. Creekmoor: US Open qualifier course that is a great golf course. 

2. Sycamore Ridge:  Might be the toughest track in the area and is a great test of golf. Woodland front nine and a links front nine will definitely push your game to the max. 

3. Stone Canyon: Another great course that is not far from the airport.

4. Shoal Creek: US Open qualifier course minutes from the airport.

 

Private Courses (In Order):

1. Wolf Creek

2. Shadow Glen

3. Canyon Farms
