Officially Retired

Quit my job for good and am now officially retired. Talked to Social Security as well and getting the ball rolling. No big plans, just play here and there and keep it in my new budget. Still got clubs to move, so have some stash here and there. Plan on practicing at the cheapie courses to get the irons on board, and go after that elusive sub 80 round. Then I will go back to tournament golf in Hopkinsville at Western Hills.

Man retirements awesome. I retired about 2 years ago and no regrets whatsoever. I belong to a CC so pretty much play everyday. Workout every day M - F and play golf the rest of the time, weather pending.

I just got signed up for Medicare as I turn 65 this month. 
 

I’m in oil & gas drilling, so still going to work another year or two, but this is my last boom😄

 

I’m looking at places that I can golf & fish when I retire, someplace like NE Florida, coastal S Carolina, etc.

 

Started working on drilling rigs when I was just shy of 20 years old & have chased them all over the world for the last 45 years, so I’m looking forward to retirement & will have no trouble occupying my time👍

Definitely a good idea for anyone at anytime. I started working out when I was 35 and have been since, just turned 65 last month. Don't necessarily do any exercises for golf though.

Congrats to you---- I semi retired 2 years ago at 62 was working part time and had a on the job injury---- Now I am fully retired and partially disabled from ever driving a truck again. Part of my rehab is playing golf. With the weather being good I am out everyday either hitting balls or playing weather permitting. We have no kids or grandkids or immediate family and we like it like that. We do not live above our means finically so we are doing great and enjoying it.

Hope you enjoy your well earned retirement as much as we are

Play well and stay healthy! You'll soon be wondering how to fit in everything you want to do in the hours of daylight you have. Got to say personally that the time to devote to short game practice in retirement has been a real plus for me. Also great to have the time to meet new friends and play new courses!

I'm 60, and I'm retiring in June, maybe sooner.

 Recent medical issue ( Parkinson's) kinda expedited the decision to retire early.

I'll work a little ( 3-5 days per month ) for the next 2 years and then collect SS.

Wife is 14 years younger and will be working for the next 10 at least.

We have no kids, so that makes it easier.

I have had many conversations  with my patients over the past 2 years and nearly all the older ones have said to retire sooner rather than later if possible. Life is too short to work 'til you're 65-67 only to have your health decline afterwords!

Personally, I'm 64, and have already "failed retirement" twice. Don't need the money, but I just get way too much of a buzz out of the "thrill of victory, agony of defeat" that is the business world. I get really bored. Love golf, but not ready to step back and give up the adrenalin rush of running a business (that increased by an order of magnitude trying to manage a company through a pandemic). 

 

Parenthetically, since this is a thread mostly full of (sort of) old guys - I've been thinking about the point in life where I'll be able to "shoot my age". 

 

Anyone 60+ gets what inevitably happens to the body. Muscle mass declines. The back gets way less flexible (I watch the swings of some of the teenagers I play with, and think I'd be in the hospital if I tried to do that - I've forgotten what it means to have a spine made of rubber). Recovery time after a round gets longer, distance off the tee gets shorter. 

 

So the mythical "shooting your age" is the intersection between two lines on a graph. Age goes up every year, abilities decline every year. So where's that point?

 

For instance, at 64, I'm quite unlikely to shoot 64. At the other end of the line, at 95, I'm pretty sure I won't be able to shoot 95 (in fact, I'd be happy if I could even walk 95 feet from my car to a clubhouse bar). 

 

But if, as the saying goes, "50 is the new 40", then maybe 80 is the new 70. I'm thinking the potential intersection when shooting one's age is possible is 80 - 85. A healthy guy that is 84, has been playing for years, and is a decent golfer might actually be able to reasonably think he can shoot an 84.

 

So, sorry to do a bit of a thread-jack OP, and this post is certainly not for the Gen WYZers here who won't know what the hell I'm talking about, but I'm curious - has anyone here actually shot their age?

To the OP, I hope you enjoy your retirement as much as I have the last four plus years. I had a great career but have never regretted riding off into the sunset.

 

For bobfoster, I shoot my age (soon to be 68) every time I play golf. The problem is that I still have a hole or two to play 😀😀😀. I will need to live a while longer to finish the round and do it.  Last year, in my best round of the year, I hit my age with my second shot on 17. Hope to better this year now that I have one more stroke to play with 😀.

Retired from 28yrs of FIRE-RESCUE work......never moved up the ladder which could have saved some of the abuse on my body but that's on me.......was 53 when I left 3yrs ago ; wife is 10yrs younger but left when I left due to her own medical issues.  

 

I actually work p/t 3 days per week at Edwin Watts........

56 now and found the VGA.......Veterans Golf Association........that is a National organization that allows Vets to compete , meet and greet other Vets .....

 

Will play Veterans and senior veterans divisions .

 

Enjoy the heck out of your time as NOTHING is promised!

What a riot! I get that. You can fudge about what "shooting your age" means. In fact, I shot my age at 40 (except, it was for the front nine ... 🤣).

I hope someday to do it the conventional way. It is a worthy long term goal and I hope to accomplish the feat with hickory, classic, and modern clubs.

Seriously get that dude. When I started playing I played blades, because there was no such thing as "GI". My woods were actually made of wood (oh, the delightful sound and feel of flushing a persimmon). I have adopted the most modern of technology over the years, but must admit to having a wee bit of nostalgia.

Congrats on the milestone.  Its time to do the things put off, delayed and promised.  Enjoy the newfound freedom. Make sure you've got hobbies, projects and places to visit with your spouse.  Its a great time to be free!

I'm trying to talk the spouse into retiring earlier, but she wants to wait till December, oh well. I plan on getting back into the Senior league tomorrow, and reunite with them.

Played my first retirement game and shot my handicap, oh well. I guess 44 front and 44 back will be okay for now. Going through a swing change, there's that!
