New 2 iron ballspeed record, am I ready for the 200 club?

Trippels

Recommended Posts

Just got to 173 ball speed with the 2 iron today. 40 inch Mizuno HMB at 14 degrees with ventus black 10TX

Haven't had my driver for 3 months because the shaft snapped and the warranty process has been a nightmare.

But I'll finally receive it back on monday.

200 mph ball speed is my main goal, should I be able to do it? Is a 27 mph difference between 2 iron and driver excessive?

45.5 inch mizuno stg, 7 degrees

Well, that is 27mph difference. Can you get there? Maybe. A 40” hollow iron at 14* with 105g graphite shaft isn’t really a 2i. I’m mid 160’s with my 39” 20* i500 with VB 10tx. Most I’ve gotten was 197 with stock course driver.

Hmm, guess I should expect to be a bit short then

Curious - I thought HMB 2i club was at most 16'.  Did you have it strengthened to 14'?  And if you did, why?  It's now in the range of a 3 wood.

I have a 16' 1 iron and four 2 irons, including the 17' 2 iron in my bag.

  • TSR2 9.25° Ventus Velo TR Blue 58
  • TSR2 15° AD VF 74
  • T200 17 2i° Tensei AV Raw White Hybrid 90
  • T100 3i to 9i MMT 105
  • T100 PW, SM9 F52/12, M58/8, PX Wedge 6.0 120
  • SC/CA Monterey

I don't have a 3 wood, don't like woods or hybrids.

It was at 17 before i bent it down to 14 because it had too much spin and height. Much better flight now.

After being Fedup with Fedex for quite some time now I finally got my driver back.

And after a quick session on the range with the PRGR sensor, the results were surprising, and dissapointing.

I've lost a lot of the speed I had built up by the time I sent the driver in on warranty 3 months ago.

Highest I got while hitting balls today was 126 club, 182 ball.

I didn't have much issue breaking 190 ball in early january, and I'm even physically stronger now.

I'm just a few mph faster in club head speed with my driver than my 2 iron.

Pretty solid, albeit anecdoctal evidence that training speed with anything less than driver is not beneficial. Seems my body just stagnated at the top speed of my 2 iron, and is not currently capable of moving much faster.

Hopefully I'll get it back rather quick.

Don't worry, I'm in the same boat. I went the range and only got my play driver to 120 last night, or so my new launch monitor tells me. That's what I get for only working on irons!

I am not sure 172 with a 2i/3i whatever it is considered is enough to reach 200 with a standard length driver.  You would probably have to go 48 inches to hit that number.  I can get a ping G500 3i up close to 170 and I have at most 190 in me with a standard length driver.

Don't let that prevent you from reaching your goals though.  Its tough though to use an analogue to try and guess where you are at, believe me, I try to do that all the time before I got my GC3 launch monitor.  Makes it so much easier to know where you are really at.

I recommend you borrow or save up to buy a quality LM (Bushnell Launch Pro I highly recommend if you can condone 3k).  It will save you a lot of head scratching and you can trust that the numbers you see are legit.

Good luck to you, definitely hope you get there.

Edit:  As far as temporary lower speeds, its a real deal for me as well.  I have access to a Trackman in the winter (also use my GC3 but played a Trackman league over winter too), worked on driver speed one night and all I could manage was 124.  Went on another day and I managed just shy of 130 so it can vary significantly.  I am sure you will hit your number at some point.

We've got some GC hawk simulators here so will probably just rely on those and the PRGR for the process.

Thanks, quite confident I'll get there. Still plenty of potential for improvement in technique, nervous system, muscle strength, and mobility. So 200 shouldn't be too hard, might just take a bit longer than planned.

Thanks for the encouragment, not quite at 200 yet but seems at least I'm back in business:
