Scottsdale course ideas

Need a bit of help with deciding on what courses to play. We have nailed down most of them but can’t decide on what others to play. Here’s the itinerary. 12 of us coming from Vancouver but flying out of Seattle in July.

Wednesday am-  chambers bay

                     Pm- fly to Phoenix

Thursday am-Grayhawk Raptor

                 Pm- TPC champions

Friday am- Troon North Monument
            Pm- Boulders North

saturday am-Quintero
                Pm- Wickenburg Ranch

sunday am-Wekopa saguaro
              Pm- Talking stick Oodham

monday - troon North monument again

I have played all of these courses but the other guys haven’t. All the morning rounds are booked and Wickenburg Ranch is also booked.  Looking for alternatives to Boulders, TPC and Talking Stick. Any recommendations would be appreciated

I’m sure you guys are aware but it gets really hot in July. I know it’s a dry heat but it’s no exaggeration to say the temperatures in the afternoons very well may be dangerous. 4 days of 36 holes in those temperatures might not be realistic. Took a visit to see family a couple years ago in July and pretty much didn’t venture outside for more than 15-20 minutes at a time in the afternoons. Rates will be great though!

I’m not sure where you are staying but Ak Chin Southern Dunes and Whirlwind would be a very enjoyable day. I would also recommend playing both Troon North courses on Friday. No reason to go somewhere else for a pm round, and that frees you up a bit Monday for different options.

Sunday - would play both Wekopa courses; if not then Eagle Mtn over TS for sure and it will allow for time in between rounds for food since it's a short drive.

Thursday - would play both Grayhawk courses - Talon is a better course than TPC

Agree with the play both Troon courses same day.

OR since you are playing Troon on Sunday - Option 1) go play Southern Dunes and then play one of the Whirlwind courses option 2) go play Both Verrado courses on Friday or one Verrado course and Sterling grove in the afternoon.

This is solid advice.  Looking at what you have scheduled it is a bit of a head scratcher.  It makes a lot of sense to play the on site courses at the same time.  As far as the heat IMO anything under 110 you can do with good hydration and cooling techniques.  Over 110 takes more planning and being careful.

Drink more water than you could ever imagine drinking, I would also buy the drink mix Liquid IV or something similar.  Even most of us locals would struggle to play that many rounds in that heat.  Stay away from the booze unless you want some guys dropping in the afternoon rounds, this heat is no joke.

sorry to barge in, but similar questions about Scottsdale golf.  Doing a Buddies trip next March.  We're gonna play 5 rounds.  Was thinking Troon North, Greyhawk and WeKopa.  i know all 3 have 36.  Which 18 should we not play.  Which is a must?

Pinnacle, Raptor, Saguaro respectively.

Great advice guys. The heat shouldn’t be a problem. We did this trip 3 years ago and we were fine.

As for playing both courses at each place on the same day, only one course is open. They shut the other course down for aeration. So we have Grayhawk Talon (raptor closed), wekopa cholla (saguaro closed), troon North monument (pinnacle closed). The morning rounds are booked and the afternoon ones we will decide day of. I think most guys will want to play Quintero twice and monument twice. We are going to definitely head to Southern Dunes now that we found out that Wickenburg Ranch goes fully private on May 1. So disappointed in hearing that.

is Boulders North a must play?

I thought a number of those courses were only taking bookings no more than 7 days in advance.  Did you call?  What are the rates for Troon, Wickenburg, Grayhawk and Wakepa?

90 days advance. All courses are under 100. That’s for the morning rounds. Even cheaper in the evening. Hence why we are doing a 10 round trip in July

Ya unfortunately one of the 2 courses at each place are closed for aeration

Hmm, that's interesting because I was able to book Wickenburg Ranch for next Monday (5/2) - public tee times are only 7 days in advance.

I will also be playing Southern Dunes this Saturday so looking forward to it!

I's definitely not call it a "must play", it is the better of the 2 courses imo from a design perspective (not scenic), but a few holes are a little wonky.  I would put either of the Verrado courses above it; and a few others.

But it won't be a bad addition if you are trying to stay in the general area.

Is Quintero worth playing twice?  Or do we head to verrado in the afternoon?

Ugh...that's not an easy question.  For a visitor it is probably worth playing again because you will have a chance to play it with some knowledge - which on a few holes is important.  As a local or someone who has played it multiple times, it is not worth a 2nd go round.

I would not head to Verrado as that is going to be an hour drive.   But if you don't mind that drive, then sure.  It just may make for an extra long day.

If you don't want to play it again, I would go play Los Caballeros in Wickenburg - or go there first and Quintero in the afternoon to save part of a drive.

I ran into that as well.  I think Troon North is the same.
