I thought the whole of Bradford was a landfill site?

I'm only half-joking; until The Broadway shopping centre was finished, Bradford really did have a massive hole like a landfill in its city centre for about 10 years. At one point, there was talk of turning it into a lake.

Completely wrong: it’s not a landfill site but it needs to be. Makes Gateshead and Murmansk look like Dubai in comparisons.

The original and viable multi-cultural centre of the UK. Much to celebrate about Bradford. I worked there in the late 70s early 80s.

I grew up there during the Seventies and Eighties. There are a lot of things to celebrate about Bradford, and yes, the curry is one of them. The Bradford League is another. And Cartwright Hall's all-too-fleeting appearance in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life.

But that hole in the city centre is not of them. I'm glad they've sorted it out, anyway, and the last time I was there, which was pre Corona, it seemed to be thriving.

Gateshead I've not been to, but there are quite a lot of number of Northern towns that have seen better days.

I spent a delightful two hours in Middlesborough waiting for a train connection. Activities to enjoy around the station included avoiding the angry drunks and finding spots that did not smell of either urine or vomit. This was during the afternoon.

Rotherham only exists to make Doncaster look posh, and Birkenhead is an unfinished toilet. My abiding memory of the place is having a road cone thrown at me one Sunday by morning by a bloke was either very drunk or high on smack. Fortunately, he was so out of his gourd, he only succeeded in throwing the cone a couple of feet. It rather reminded me of my tee shot on the first hole on Captain's Day many years ago in front of the Pro (who was my instructor at the time).

Where there’s muck there’s money lad. Or there was.

As a guest at Harrogate GC visitors’s day I topped my drive at the first when the ball hit a triangular tee marker on the LGU tee and split in half. One half landing amongst a group on the 18th green nearby and the other half going c 100 yds down our fairway.

On asking if anyone knew the rule I was told to play both halves and divide the total score by two.

Aye, where there's muck, there's brass. I think that was what brought my Dad "Oop North" from London. Anyway, he liked it well enough to stay.

I've not played the courses around Harrogate, but I've heard that Harrogate GC is very good, as is Pannal, though I'm not sure if that counts as a Leeds course or Harrogate course.

I’ve been twice a member at Pannal in south Harrogate ( Harrogate Union ), firstly living in Wetherby. Second time travelling down as a country member when I retired. Pannal was on the old pro tour circuit at c 6600 yds in Alliss’s day. I was lucky to get in but made friends for life. It’s changed from an exclusive club to catering for the masses.

If you were to play three courses, my preference would be, in order: Alwoodley, Moortown & Pannal. Cheers.

Ah, Peter Alliss, Bryon Hutchinson and Murray Burgess, happy days. And George Duncan's lad was at Alwoodley.

Good choices. I knew a member at Alwoodley who offered to play with me when I was back in the UK, but by the time I was back in the UK and ready to play, he was no longer in good health. Isn't that the first course Alistair MacKenzie had a hand in designing?

Pannal similarly I once had an offer to play at with a member, but it never panned out. I think a girl was involved....

I forgot Platts ( Lionel was it ) - didn’t know Duncan.

Committee dumped Murray who is still there as he got free membership as compen. We used to give him 6 handicap to get a decent game in members v captain and pro for club funds.

I hope it wasn’t that barmaid I’m thinking about.

Alwoodley is unchanged I believe but they built a massive castle in lieu of the old cricket pavilion of the 1980’s. I believe it was Braid or AM.  Used to love the old team matches v these clubs and we won the Harrogate Union in one of the years I was selected to play. Moor Allerton, as one of the first “ new clubs “, wasn’t popular with us. Pros were lucky to break 80 around it.

Yes, Lionel and his pal from Roundhay, Hedley Muscroft. Big money team.

Colt/MacKenzie.

Moortown was the first MacKenzie designed off his own bat.

Nice to see this thread kicking and also nice to see the 1955 ferrule discussion I have seen a set of those irons locally with those ferrules and I assumed they were ladies due to the "blue".

Anyway, I've used my Spalding Cash-In Special for a majority of this season.  When the greens got really fast I was thrown and went back to my Iron Master but I find it easier to find the sweet spot on the Cash-in and it's now back in the bag.

Thes are on Ebay currently. I believed that these were 'store line' clubs but I've reason to doubt it. There are a number of these identically patterned clubs around with different Pro names, always well known ones. Could it be that this was a design Spalding used for personalising clubs to their Staff players or top customers.

They look great. Instead of having the 'spade' framing they have a 'clubs' framing, which I find interesting.

What do you think?

I think its a store line model.  They look very similar to the 1961-62 which was Synchro Dyned.

Now I'm still "new" to the Spalding line but I think the pro models would have had said "pro model" or "professional" on them.  Or at least "Synchro Dyned" which seemed to disappear in 1965.

I have a few of the catalogs.  1959, '64, '65, '66, and '67. In one of those there is a Jay Hebert model and it's cheaper than the pro models but looks rather identical to the '63-64s down to having the Spade face framing.

However, that said.  Chi-Chi had a store line model I believe and here is a picture of him in the mid 60s.  I doubt these are the store line but rather a customized set like you were theorizing Saplding may have made for some of their pros.

I suspect that they're American, nice clubs.

I saw this model advertised in Golf Monthly 1964 which I, therefore, suspect might have been made in their Northern Ireland factory.
