Hi All,

 

Playing a few days out of Pittsburg area in May including the likes of Oakmont and Laurel Valley, and wondering thoughts on Firestone (South) or any other must plays in the eastern Ohio area. Happy to drive a few hours outside of Pittsburg so keen to hear about what else we should maybe include in our trip. Cheers.

Obviously seems like you have connections to get on courses.    There is Fox Chapel and Pittsburgh Field Club that you could look at.   Personally I like Firestone South a lot.  Very old school with tree lined fairways.   The north course at Firestone is also very good.  Cleveland area has some excellent courses.  Depends on how far you want to drive.

Thanks for the recommendations, looks like we will do Firestone South. Will also take a look at the other two!

Canton Brookside is fantastic if you're in the Akron area. I really enjoy Portage CC too in that area and Sharon GC is an all men's club just outside of Akron that I've always heard is unreal. If you're staying closer to Youngstown, I'd say Avalon Lakes. Canton Brookside would be my first choice though if you're looking for another place to play other than Firestone in the area.

The Virtues (Longaberger) near Nashport. It's not Oakmont, but is consistently in the Top 100 public courses and seldom crowded.

I live in the Akron area and love Firestone South. But if I had to choose between Canton Brookside and Firestone South I think I’d go with Brookside. 
 

Firestone has the history which is cool but Brookside is a really great layout with some difficult/fun greens.

For future searchers, if you go north of Pittsburgh to Erie, PA...Kahkwa Club is an amazing Donald Ross design. Fantastic course. Whispering Woods in Erie is a great public course worth playing if you're up there too. Lakeview CC is great. (I'd personally skip Lawrence Park and Lakeshore CC in Erie over the 3 I listed previously.)

 

Avalon Lakes is a Pete Dye the LPGA played on. Trumbull CC is an old private but public can get on via Boxgroove.

 

Lots of good private clubs in Cleveland suburbs too many to list. Canterbury, Sand Ridge (Chardon,) Quail Hollow, etc.
