2022 Palos Verdes Championship presented by Bank of America, April 28- May 1

The course this week offers similar challenge as last week:

COURSE DESCRIPTION

"The course is a classic example of Thomas and Bell designs of the 1920’s with extensive use of natural hazards. The premium is on accuracy rather than length. While not long in length at 6433 yards, they used the natural terrain, barrancas, creeks, and hills while taking into account our prevailing westerly ocean breezes. The small greens, extensive bunkering, narrow fairways with strategically designed landing areas make the course a challenge for golfers of all levels. Members pride in preserving the original design and routing of this masterpiece."

Good TV schedule:

  • April 28 Golf Channel (ET)        6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
  • April 29 Golf Channel (ET)        6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
  • April 30 Golf Channel (ET)        6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
  • May 01 Golf Channel  (ET)        6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

The course is at sea level. If they actually play it at 6400 yds, which I doubt they will, it'll play much longer.

It's a stronger field than last week; three more world's Top-15 players will be in the field:

#3                     Lydia Ko

#7                     Lexi Thompson

#15                   Jessica Korda

Nasa (#6) is skipping the event.  The winner will receive 58.00 or more Rolex points based on the strength of field.

Should be a visually stunning course, with winds from the ocean should be a good test.  You don't wanna be missing fairways by too much, there looks like some nasty stuff out there looking a google maps

It appears as though several players who FAILED to Monday qualify today got in anyway.

Well spotted @MagicClassic407

... I spotted Andrea Lee’s name (as “Lucky Loser”/ next-highest qualifier)

... Anybody else I missed? ie didn’t see other names from the Monday Q’s Leaderboard

(eg Kylie Chong, Alyaa Abdulghany, Kelly Whaley)

in the final  145-player Field/ tournament entry list? 📝

I'm happy for Megan Osland.  She has been fighting to elevate her game, but she just hasn't had as much success as she would have liked, so making the cut in an LPGA event, even an inaugural one will be nice for her.

She has the game capability, but struggles to put it altogether on a consistent basis.

Looks like Jessica is WD again.  She’s not on the list above posted on Monday.

I could be wrong as just going from memory but Gina Kim I believe and Mariah Stackhouse.............

Thanks @MagicClassic407…

this is interesting (to me?) ie Gina Kim was T9 at the Monday Q’s (and Mariah Stackhouse was T17?)

wondering if you (or other folks here) have any insights how this “leapfrogging over folks who placed higher in the Monday-qualifiers” has happened?
Am Just curious.

Stackhouse was first reserve and got in on priority status when someone(J Korda?) withdrew. Kim and Lee got the last two sponsor invites, but not sure why.

It reminds me of the Olympic Club and Riviera Country Club:

To me, it looks closer to Olympic Club than Riviera, but the influences are definitely there!

I think because it has that early 1900s California/West Coast private parkland look to it. It's my personal favourite style of golf course.

Note: Palos Verdes GC was designed by the same architect that worked on Riviera so the similarity will most certainly be there.

For two years in a row, Maria Fassi has managed to keep her card and stay inside CME #100 to give her plenty of opportunities to play.  With no exception, this year she's off to her fourth slow start to the season.

She's way passed her "Put up or Shut up" stage, and she may need to salvage another season this year sitting at CME #139 right now.
