Tour Maverick McNealy's custom (3rd iteration) Callaway Apex MB - 2022 AT&T Byron Nelson

Getting a 3 iron made, a new 10 iron is being made to have the same grooves as the 11 iron.  The 4 iron thru 7 iron are going into play for sure this week but the 8 & 9 irons are TBD.

Surely at this stage it would be easier to just get artisan to make a set of blank heads and just pay whatever the licensing fee is to stamp callaway on them? They did that with the miura heads they offer

More toe side mass will usually increase MOI slightly but also more importantly shift the sweet spot towards the toe. Traditional blades have sweet spots that are often slightly heel side and if pro's strike pattern is consistently in the center of the face then it warrants shifting CG slightly away from the heel, something Tiger notably had done with the tungsten plugs in his irons which McNealy seems to have been using here.

He’s 31 in the FedEx cup and not to mention there are only a few hundred pros in the world they’ll do anything for. This is literally what the tour departments exist for.

I believe McNealy remains the only Callaway staffer to have a unique Toulon model crafted specifically for him, which was made when he was toiling away on the Korn Ferry tour. I'm pretty sure every other staffer with a custom Toulon uses one of their standard models (Austin, Madison, etc.) with custom lines or necks or whatever. I always wondered what the deal was with that, and your answer is the most plausible one I've come up with.

Eh I normally tell people to stick with our prepacked and already in production things at work as to not to anything extra i dont need to do...but sometimes a request comes along and you just feel like doing something cool because you can and you have the time and drive to do it.

 

Maybe Fritelli's request found a guy in the tour dept that said "OMG YES I've been wanting to do that!" and it got pushed through. Maybe Mav's iron set here is the same - someone wanting to create a badass set of irons that's been just looking for a reason to.

 

You never know.

They need to release that 4 wood!  It reminds me of my old Big Berth Pro tour issue 4 wood I had forever until the face cracked.  Haven't found as good a fairway wood for both off the tee and fairway since.  Was my unicorn for sure.

Looks like McNealy has made $2M in each of his last 2 years on tour, 75th in OWGR.  I think Callaway is betting on his future success and building a little loyalty now.   Their tour roster doesn't have many names in the 26 and under category.

 

Fritelli (who has the $4k A wedge) is 122nd and has made 2.2M in the last two years total. 

 

Perhaps the Callaway tour guys are just awesome.
