Why isn’t Calvin Peete in the Hall of Fame?

Before Tiger, Calvin Peete was the best Black golfer on the PGA Tour, winning 12 times including the Players Championship and made multiple Ruder Cup teams and also won the Vardon trophy. Not to mention he led the tour in hitting the fairway off the tee 10 years in a row! Why hasn’t he been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame yet?

His (Peete) Vardon trophies are a little tainted.  He had a habit of withdrawing mid-round if he was having a bad round.  They actually made a rule as a result and after Peete won again in 1984, if you X-out a round you aren't eligible for the Vardon any more.

Interesting story, I've never heard about Peete's habit of withdrawing mid round.

Don Pooley also has a Vardon and he was not popular with his peers because he never entered a tournament on a hard long course that year.

Nothing to do with Calvin Peete but there are way too many people in the hall of fame.  It’s set up to support the museum and not to enshrine only the greats.  You should need 20 tour wins a a minimum and multiple majors.  Speaking for the mens side.  JMO

Ever seen the roster on the WWE Hall of Fame?  Pete Rose,  Mike Tyson, and even Trump are in it so that tells you something of their standards.

If you ignore the rules to make an exception for one player one time what happens when another player with similar qualifications doesn't get the same benefit of the doubt?

highly unlikely someone with similar qualifications came from a background like peete did ... not saying he should necessarily be in, but his story is unique because of his origins and time ... double digit wins and a player's from someone that grew up literally dirt poor while fighting, to some degree, discrimination, is outright exceptional ...  ...

I imagine it’s possible he wouldn’t even want to get in on any special considerations besides his numbers.

His accomplishments on the course are definitely noteworthy.

And I think any golf/sports fan appreciates the circumstances that make his career special.

Truthfully, I know little to nothing about his career. But now I see it’s very good.

Players is no small feat.

And this shot on 17 is *alls!

Sounds like most Halls...they've morphed into the 'Hall of Pretty Good.'

Not all perennial all stars are all time greats.  If you put a number on it…like 20 wins minimum with 2 majors….you will end up with a dust bin.

Let’s create a Hall of Absolute F’g Legends.  Set the bar so high only once-in-a-generation types qualify.  Maybe do it for all sports?  Leave the HoF for the greats, but when everybody is considered great, no one actually will be.

Hall of Legends or Hall of __________?

Great post. However my reply about qualifications was based solely on the minimum qualifying numbers wise that the WGHOF requires for nomination and possible selection to the WGHOF at this time as a player. Sadly regardless of his back story or another change for eligibility as a player he will never be inducted. As I mentioned earlier in the the thread he could make it in as a contributor but that's a long shot.

Performance matters. If you make the HOF a popularity contest it’s watered down.

It’s The Hall of Fame, being famous is literally a popularity contest. If it were not a factor then it would called the Hall of Statistical Achievements and there would voting would not be part of the process.

Unfortunately for Calvin in spite of his 12 tour wins including a TPC he doesn't meet the qualifying criteria to be nominated for the WGHOF as a player. He won twice on the Japanese tour which counts towards the WGHOF. Sadly he is 1 win short of being able to be nominated.

Appears his only way to be inducted would be via the Contributor category.

https://www.worldgolfhalloffame.org/criteria/

A player must have a cumulative total of 15 or more official victories on any of the original members of the International Federation of PGA Tours (PGA TOUR, European Tour, Japan Golf Tour, Sunshine Tour, Asian Tour and PGA of Australasia) OR at least two victories among the following events: The Masters, THE PLAYERS Championship, the U.S. Open, The Open Championship and the PGA Championship.

A player must be at least 45 years old during the year of a given Induction Ceremony (example: A player be at least 45 years old in 2021 in order to qualify for the Class of 2021), or be at least three years removed from being an active participant (as determined by the Tour) on any of the original members of the International Federation of PGA Tours.

Contributor
To be considered for selection in the Contributor category, an individual must have impacted the game significantly in areas outside of the competitive arena (i.e. administrator, course architect, innovator, instructor, media, etc.).

Individuals may be nominated in the Contributor category by a member of the Nominating Committee or a World Golf Hall of Fame member.

Because that is just the criteria to be on the ballot.  Not to be inducted.

True.  If I had a time machine I’d figure out how to pay Bubba enough to just go up to elk and open hand slap him during this exchange. it was later said that he would walk ahead of Bubba after hitting  his approach , and get purposely into his eye line. I personally think these type old school gamesmanship moves should be met with similar old school tactics.  Good ole 5 fingers to the face being one.

i used to enjoy his swing. But after hearing his mouth, and then the subsequent stories , i just think he’s a one  dimensional and a pretty insecure guy.
