KBS C-TAPER

I need some advice. I had my golf bag stolen and lost the lot. Waiting for an insurance payout but not expecting to be able to start from new. My irons were Mizuno MP-69 with Kbs Tour S 120 shafts. I have been offered a set of Titleist 620 CB with C-Taper shafts for a very good price. Has anyone made a similar switch in shaft and if so how different was the feel?

Sorry about your bag.

The change from tour to ctaper will be rather dramatic. The tours are very smooth and have a rather active tip. They produce high ballflight and high-ish spin.

The ctapers are very firm throughout. More boardy than smooth. They are lower spin than the tours. They will also flight the ball down more. You may end up hitting the ctapers longer and have more control. But the profiles are very different and you may not like the ctaper feel.

What flex are the ctapers?

+1 they are different.  I ballooned my old KBS Tour X130's and went to the S+ C-Tapers.  Much better for me were the C-Tapers.  As far as the feel goes im not sure you can beat the Tours but the C-Tapers felt really good as well to me, felt like I had more control of the head.  I have heard people say they feel harsh but im not one of those, the waggle test of C-Tapers does not do it justice, try hitting one before making that decision.

Thanks FirePro. Unfortunately it’s an all or nothing deal and I won’t get a chance to test, so at about $850 USD for 4-PW  in the 620 Cb (look almost brand new) it’s probably worth a try.

The biggest difference in feel between the two is the tours will have kick...you'll feel the mid section load in transition. All you feel.with the ctapers is the handle. As firepro noted, they aren't necessarily harsh..just boardy. If you get on with the profile then you'll enjoy the control aspect they bring.

If you want to dual in dispersion then the ctaper is the better shaft. But if you play a stock shot and you're consistent with it then the ctaper will reduce sidespin of your stock shot. You'll likely have to adjust aim lines to be more aggressive..and that can be off-putting for some.

Thanks getitdaily. I play a fairly straight ball flight, bad miss is a pull typically. I think I'll give them a whirl and if I dont get on I can just sell them on at near the same price. This way I should still be able to get a bag and TSi3 driver...appreciate the advice.

For what it's worth, I am one of those unusual people out there who spins C Taper and $ Taper more than the equivalent weight Tour. There was about 600rpm between the three, $ Taper, C Taper, Tour, in that order. The Tours launched highest but that's OK. They also felt the best and I could work the ball better, which I struggled to do with the C Taper. My fitter said that, in his experience, $ Taper generally spins more than Tour but that it's strange to see C Taper also spin more. Not unheard of.

I've put a bit of speed back into my irons and I'm now swinging my 7 iron around the same speed as I was 15 years ago, when I played X100's. The Tour 120 wasn't quite cutting it in terms of spin and dispersion and height and we found the best combination with my T100S heads (I'm not looking for new heads, just a shaft improvement) came from the Tour 130 or X100 (not AMT) over the rest of the KBS and DG lineup, and some Modus shafts (but I hated the feel). And the Tour 130's were half the price of the TI X100's... so... sold.

Thanks steventoo. I'd love to try all options and get fit but theres no way I can afford all that right now.  I'll just have to chance my arm on the c-tapers.

No worries. Where in the world are you located? If you're in .au, I have a spare set of 115g (R+) Tours - 0.5" long - which I can pull, if that might help. They aren't quite the 120's, but they're close.

You might like the C Taper - especially if the deal is right.

I had the KBS Tour and C-Tapers in my bag for many years in the past.  Dare I say that they are polar opposites.  Whereas the Tour is a higher launch/mid spin shaft with a softer tip, the C-Tapers are very tip stiff and low launch/spin.  They will feel like rebar and have no kick.  Since fitting is not an option for you at this time, you may just have to bite the bullet until insurance pays out.

Thanks Steventoo. Im in New Zealand but appreciate the thought. I’ll pick up the cb’s with the c-tapers tomorrow and see how I go. Worst case scenario I’ll have to find other shafts but I’ll give the tapers a crack first.  Bloody insurance offered me $120 for a Scotty Cameron! Good lesson there though to dispute what insurance offers you. Went back to them at $550 with a few examples and they agreed to pay my figure. Did the same with their offer for my irons & got another $200 for them. Not enough to build a bag but will get me the cb’s, a stadry carry bag and maybe the TSi3 hybrid (or deposit on the driver)

Yikes. I hope I can adjust because I’ll be buying the cb’s with the c-tapers tomorrow.

Got the CB’s with the C-Tapers. If anything I think I’m getting higher spin than the KBS Tour 120’s which is a bit weird. Noticeably higher ball flight and picked up a bit of distance too. I think the dispersion is excellent even on my slightly thinned shots and distance lost on those was not bad. Looking forward to seeing how they go on course now. Thanks for all the advice.

That's not uncommon. You're used to the feel of the tours. The stiffer handle feeling could lead you to a bit of an early release...

It definitely took me a little while to just settle back into my swing as initially I felt like I had to go hard at it. But whether it was the shafts or the club heads once I slowed down and even tried 3/4 swings the distance and dispersion was good (for me).

Might work for you. C Taper is a great shaft but I find that I play 120 S in the Tours but in C Taper I go with R-plus at 115g. Dropping down a half-flex made them feel better easier to load. The full stiff C Tapers wore me out by the end of rounds. I really enjoy the feel and flat flight of them. If they fit you, hard to find a more accurate shaft.

I definitely felt like I’d had a workout after hitting 50 odd balls. Happy with the results so far - I don’t mind the extra launch and carry I’m seeing.  Dispersion is good too.

You're in the minority then, but I'm glad to see that they are working out for you so far.  i ended up having some issues with my elbows and hands because of the harshness/vibration from the C-tapers which is why I made the switch to composite but that's another story.  Other members have also reported the same issues, so just be aware of this in the future.
