Is your Driver swing same as Iron swing?

Recommended Posts

I have my Driver swing and different swing for everything else.... Like its 2 completely different games

I'm swing up with Driver and Down with all other clubs..... Same for you guys or is your Driver swing like your iron swing?

But just played a round couple days ago with swinging down with driver with good results..... was so strange cause felt like my Iron swing and was very easy to control shapes, specially draws that I usually struggle with as I'm a power fader when swinging up.... distance was not an issue with the higher spin as ball still got out in a hurry.

Anyone swing down w Driver just to have 1 type of swing? I've heard most pros swing a little down not up...

Can't figure how to like my own posts

If I'm not warmed up, then yes. I tee the ball 1/2" high for the first 3-4 holes  to get in a similar groove.

You might set up differently, and have a different intent hitting up on the ball. But its the same swing. Whatever you do really well in your iron swing you do in your driver swing, and whatever faults you have in your iron swing, you have in your driver swing. Some are just more noticeable when the shaft is longer, and because of the distance, the misses are bigger.

Same swing.  When practicing, if I'm a little off on my driver I go back to hitting wedges a few times before I got at it again.  Set up is a little different because one club is longer than the other.

I'd say similar swings.  I try to be more fluid using woods, but more of a hitter using irons.

5 hours ago, Lasorcier said:

Same swing, different ball position.  Driver ball is after the swing bottoms (level or ascending), iron ball is before the swing bottom (level or descending).

For me it's this. Maybe a tad more effort in the driver and FWs, but focus on swinging smooth and feeling my peak speed is just after the ball. Yeah, I know that's impossible, but it's the thought that allows me to accelerate through the ball.

On camera the swings are pretty similar but they 100% feel different and my intentions/keys are different. I don’t think about any of this over the ball but…

For driver I definitely feel like I’m hitting up and I’m using much more legs in the swing. I also prefer a pretty light grip pressure with driver. I’d say it’s light overall but it is lighter with driver for sure.

For irons I’m feeling as I’m of course hitting down on it but almost as if I’m hitting on a downhill slope (that kind of feel).

Same basic ideas  , but setup differences cause radically different looking  swings

Driver

wider stance

more of an “A” frame look to the legs

weight distribution slightly favoring the rear foot at setup

hands should start out more towards the middle of stance

Ball teed up and positioned opposite the lead heel

longer shaft means standing further from the ball and a flatter swing

Because the ball is teed up AOA will vary from slightly down to slightly up

Because of the wider stance there will be more lateral movement to weight the front foot in the downswing

Irons

Narrower stance

weight varying from equally distributed to slightly favoring the front foot

hands should start out with a small amount of shaft lean

ball played further back in the stance than the driver

because ball is on the ground AOA must be negative to compress the ball

Shorter  shafts mean standing closer to the ball and steeper swings

narrower stances mean less lateral movement to weight the lead foot.

Because hitting drivers off of the tee has more room for error, and irons are designed for more precision  many golfers swing more within themselves with irons than with drivers.

Using Monte’s NTC methodology I ‘cast’ differently with driver than every other club to create upward clubhead delivery.

A lot of it will be personal intents and feels that make the swings feel the same or different. I know on camera my swings look very similar other than the driver downswing being noticeably flatter from the top.

Same swing, but angle of attack is generally different but occasionally not depending on the shots I am trying to play. I tend to try and keep my ball flight as low as possible with driver, by hitting down on it slightly and teeing the ball down a little lower. You won’t maximize distance that way but you will maximize control and minimize your miss.

I tend to get a little arm run off with driver so I have different feels for that club.

Driver: keep arms wide and feel like there's minimal wrist c0ck. Use my body as a unit to propel the club. Xander's driver swing is what I picture in my mind

Every other club: feel I point the butt of the club at my toe line while I pivot. More of an active wrist hinge or I have a tendency to get too flat when I don't think about it.

I make slight modifications.  I try to hit up on driver slightly and ball position is obviously more forward.  My stance is also signficantly wider as well.  I tilt my left shoulder up a bit as well when I set up to the ball whereas with irons, it's more level.

I never understood people saying they have different swings for different clubs, golf is hard enough as it is.

For full swings, I have one swing and one ball position. Ball position only changes relative to my back foot. As the stance widens, head naturally moves behind the ball allowing you to sweep the fairway woods, and hit the driver on the upswing.

Famous Johnny Miller comment …

Guys are generally great drivers or great iron players, the swings are different.  It’s rare to find a player good in both

Same swing, different ball position and setup for me. If I'm changing things from a swing perspective, my "swing intent" with driver needs to feel almost twice the amount of effort to usually do it correctly.

You don’t hit up on driver or down on irons.  You hit it on a different part of the arc.  If you’re trying to do either  of those things, you’re likely making a poor swing.

As far as Miller’s comment.  It’s about the swing pattern.  Some swings are more efficient before the low point and some are better after it.
