Phil out of PGA championship

Not surprising. Lots of reasons Phil wasn't going to play PGA Championship. The US backlash has been fierce, Phil lost pretty much all his US sponsors, and Shipnuck's book is coming out the beginning of the PGA Championship week.  The negative media firestorm would have been crazy and very difficult to play well under all that chaos. However, the PGA of America surely wanted him there because of the media firestorm. It would have brought a ton of ratings to the event.

How does the PGA get the Wanamaker back lol. Is it like the Open where the Champion returns it every year? If that is the case, does Phil have to Fedex that huge piece of metal back to the PGA Of America. I don't think Phil can afford express shipping and standard mail is a nightmare lol

At least with USPS it should arrive eventually.

FedEx tracking is basically ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You'd think a bunch of WRX golf nuts would know that the PGA of America and the PGA Tour are two entirely separate entities. They something like 40 years ago. In fact they are sometimes a bit at odds.

He is in no way suspended from the PGA Championship.

My guess is that he is either worried about the fact that the worst is likely still coming out in that book next week...or he knows specifically what is coming. The mention of his wife Amy is a bit odd.

I think you nailed it. Look at all the controversy around the book - and it hasn't even been released yet.

The scenario could turn into an utter nightmare for Phil. The books hits the streets two days before the tourney begins (every journalist and TV announcer will have read it immediately). Everyone is going to be talking about it even if Phil isn't at the tournament. If he showed up, it would turn into a media frenzy - he'd basically be chum tossed into a bay full of sharks.

Add to that the fact that he probably wouldn't play very well. This isn't just a normal PGA tourney you show up to play casually. The field will have most of the world's best, playing on a pretty tough course, and (importantly) Phil hasn't played a competitive round in over three months.

Combine the controversy that will be raging, with the fact that his golf itself could very well suck, and the picture that emerges is one in which there's virtually nothing positive that could come out of his appearance. It's all potential downsides, no upsides.

His best bet (IMO) would be to let the book get released. Let it get publicly digested for a couple months. The public has the attention span of a gnat. (Things become yesterday's news pretty quickly. Won't be forgotten, but won't be as important.) After a couple months, play a Champion's event or two to get tournament ready again before getting back on the PGAT.

NOTE: Of course, there's still a massive wild card looming over everything. We know the PGAT has formally denied applicants permission to play the June LIV event. As of yet, we don't know how many golfers will play it anyway, or what type and level of penalties the Tour will impose on those that do. Or how the nearly inevitable court battles over the penalties will turn out.

In truth, there's at least some chance we may never see Phil on the PGAT again. He'll have to play the LIV. His days on the PGAT are nearly over anyway, and there's no way he can afford his lifestyle - with an apparently serious gambling addition, huge house, private jet & etc. - from Champion's winnings and making cuts on the PGAT.

Phil has an explanation for everything else he says and does.  Im sure his explanation will come out eventually as well.

Just because you have a reason, it doesn't mean it's a good reason. That being said no ill will towards the man. It's fun to watch him play golf.

Everyone here is fully aware the PGA Tour and PGA of America are not the same entity. But you are mistaken if think the PGA of America, USGA, or R&A would allow someone to play in their championship who was under suspension by a major tour such as the PGA Tour or the Euro Tour. But golf being golf, no one will publicize suspensions that don't relate to PED's.

People are crazy if they think Phil is voluntarily missing this championship.

A total lie. This is the face saving way to deal with a suspension. Like when Dustin Johnson walked off the range of a tournament he was playing in to take a "voluntary" six month sabbatical.

PGA championship isn’t run by the PGA tour.

Fun fact. Phil is right handed.

*apologize for being “that guy”. 😂

Ya, throw righty, bat lefty is rare but guys who do that are usually really good.

My buddy did that in uncle rico baseball. He was quite dexterous. Could like drive and roll a doobie at the same time 🤣

With the odd wording of his “withdrawal” and speculation of his shadow ban (suspension), I wonder if Nantz knows more? He sounds pretty definitive here.

“[Mickelson] will be back,’’ Jim Nantz, CBS’s lead golf broadcaster, said this week. “Sometimes, we get caught up in the cyclone of the story, and we think it’s forever. It won’t be forever. He’ll be back, he’ll play, he’s got a ton of fans out there. This is a forgiving nation, and there’s a million examples of people finding their way back to being on top again, and I fully expect he will one day.’’

I wish Jim Nantz could serve a lifetime suspension for Phil.

Phil spent too much time getting high on his own farts and transitioned from being a likeable fun underdog in the Tiger era to becoming an insufferable horses a** when given more attention. For all his success and priding himself on being the smartest person in the room he sure made some very dumb moves and played his hand poorly. Phil is done and can't say i'm sad to see him go.

I disagree bf

The worst of Phils scandal is out there.
His Saudi/PGA Tour Drama has been out there for months.

And besides the Bones fedex thing, everybody already knew Phil had some shady gambling issues.

I doubt there are any surprises left.

So, Phil didn’t kill anybody or sponsor dog fighting, time to get out there.

Understand he may be too shellshocked. But if he just went out there and played golf, he’d see the fans don’t even care much about his issues.

Nobody really cares about anything but themselves. People much more concerned with getting a perfect rare/medium rare cook on their burger 🍔 and what’s on Netflix than any stuff Phil has going on ; )
