is pasatiempo @ $345 worth it?

Rankings are completely subjective, everybody likes different things! In this case you like Spy and I prefer Pasa. Both are fair. I just used the rankings when discussing price because that is what a lot of people are going to go off of and I think that makes the price fair. I think Pasa is a much better course than TPC Sawgrass, but Sawgrass is charging double. I'm also fine with that, they pack their course, why charge less than you can get.

I've long had a sneaking suspicion, based on very little actual on-the-ground experience, that I'm for some reason a sucker for a Trent, Sr. course. I've only actually played two of them and seen a couple of on TV golf, read about a few others. But something about the way he lays out a course just seems cool to me, whether it's a big-time resort like Spyglass Hill or some unheralded course in Ohio.

mci... why aren't you back in St. Louis enjoying the Blues' winning streak?

The green complexes at pasa are the best I’ve ever played and I have played spy enough to know the intricacies of that layout. Spy and pasa are 1 and 1a for me. Both are kind of a slog.

all the long par 4s at pasa play downhill. The short par 4s at pasa are straight up a mountain. But the way the putts break uphill to the ocean is my favorite thing

I have played both.

Charge me the same rate for Spyglass and Pasatiempo and I'm playing Pasa 9 times out of 10. And the 1 time for Spyglass is for a change of pace and nothing else.

Spyglass doesn't even make my top 10 favorite courses I've ever played. Pasa is in the top 3 for sure. Maybe top 2.

Spyglass was a lot of fun. Holes 1 and 4 are so good. Pasatiempo is really cool. Holes 3, 6, 11, and 16 are such interesting holes. Would probably play Pasa more often than Spyglass if given the choice. People say Pebble is overrated/overpriced but holes 6,7,8,18 are just special. I understand the ocean is what defines Pebble but come on, how cool is it to play golf on top of an ocean?

Not to get too off track. But I love Pebble and think the inland holes are great too. The argument that pebble is only good because of the ocean (not what you are saying but what others say) is ridiculous. It is literally part of the course and strategy of play. Like saying pinehurst wouldn't be as good with different greens or Pasa wouldn't be as good without the ravine running through it.

Tournaments have been won and lost on #18 at Pebble Beach. The ocean is an integral part of that hole.

On holes 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 18 the ocean can, and will, come into play for a lot of us.

Just played Pasa for the first time recently, and I was blown away. From a layout/design/architecture standpoint it is definitely the best course I have ever played. Just so many nuances and intricacies.

If beauty/scenery is your main focus, then Pasa won't do it for you and one of the ocean courses is where money should be spent. But if design is your premium, Pasa is a hard 10/10.

The price always kept me away from the course, but I found a late morning time for $140 on GN. I swear it must have been a glitch because the course was in perfect shape.

Make sure your short game is tidy before you play, those greens are beautifully brutal.

They are re doing the course starting in April meaning 9s will be shut down accordingly.

sounds like it impressed you the way it did me!  It’s easily the best designed golf course I’ve ever played. There are plenty “better” but not from a design perspective

Many find it to be racist.  I think it's sort of silly to say that but I can understand the take.. which is that the sleeping Mexican is not a positive image.  Having played the course with people who pointed this out and did find it be at least a little offensive, I can't put it with my favorite logoes.

As for the course... I gave my thoughts in the early pages.  I have played it many many times over many years (I live about 1/2 hour from it) and the more I play it, the more I find about it that is less than awesome.  I'll never pay full freight.  But to each his own.....

It will be interesting to see the course after Urbina is done with it.  I understand they are working mostly on the greens.  One can dream about a restored 1-6-7-9 though…

Siesta is a total Spanish tradition. I was in Madrid a couple of years ago and the streets suddenly emptied around 2pm when everyone goes for a nap.

No doubt that is true.  However, the stereotype in California and other places where many Mexican- Americans live is that these people are lazy.  I AM NOT SAYING THAT IS TRUE IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM.  I am saying that there are people who believe that and perpetuate the stereotype.  Taking that into consideration, it's easy to see (I think) how this logo can be perceived in a negative way.

As someone who has lived in CA my entire life, I find that stereotype so funny because Latinos bust their asses off out here. You're not gonna see white people in Ventura and Cencal harvesting all the strawberries and other agriculture! More often than not, they're the ones doing the crappy jobs nobody else wants to do.

100% agreed

After playing Spyglass and pasa back to back can say they are both amazing. But man the greens at pasa are really special. Especially 16.

16 has too much slope for modern green speeds. Back in the day it was, I'm sure, awesome.

They are re-doing all their greens, by the way. I think it's already started.

Agree about 16. It’s quite fun but way too severe over 10 on stimp. That green alone could add 30 mins to a round at a high level stoke play event.
