Do I really need a 5 iron?

Beginner here.  I would like to purchase a set of 2021 T300 irons.  I'm thinking I should order 6-W1 in order to be somewhat close to "traditional" lofts.  Do I really need the T300 5 iron (23 degree loft)?  23 degree loft is more like a 4 iron.  I don't think I can generate enough speed to hit 23 degrees longer than the t300 6 iron (26 degrees).

Nothing wrong with doing that at all and it might help simplify things as you're starting out. And you're right that 23* is more like a modern-traditional 4 iron, so it won't be easy to hit as a beginner even in a Game Improvement set. I would say save yourself the money and go without the 5 iron. As you get better and you figure out you need a club in that spot there will be options at that point to order a single club, either 5 iron or maybe hybrid.

Other than the generic “get fit” response, do you have any idea what your club head speed is for any particular club?

In general, around that loft your options in highest to lowest order of club head speed and ability to make solid contact are: iron, iron with lighter shaft, hybrid, 9 wood.

I went with a ping g410 9 wood to replace the 5 iron.  much easier to hit.  or a hybrid.  lots of choices.  so save the $ on the 5 iron, as noted above you can always add one later on if needed.

only you know if you need it. Some sets now skip the 5 even and fill in with hybrids all the way up to 3 wood or go with 5 wood and 7 wood.

I got fit at TPI and we went 6-P in the T100, and replaced my OG AP2 5-iron with the TSi1 7H 29 turned down 1 degree. Hit it about 5 yards further but 2.5x higher.

It's refreshing to hear you be honest and smart in talking about what clubs suit you. T300s, questioning needing a 5 iron, swing speed... I'm certain you're going to enjoy the game and get pretty good through this kind of outlook - instead of forcing yourself into blades and 2 irons...

I have a jacked 5 iron at 24 deg and I put a Recoil shaft into it. With the stock shaft, it was pretty hit or miss and I'd just go to my hybrid. Now that I've made it fit me, it's useful for the gap between my new hybrid and my 6 iron.

It's the same question I am asking myself.

I only want to stick to carry 12 clubs so I think it is best that I ditch the 5 iron and 58 degree lob wedge for a 4 hybrid and a 56 degree sand wedge.

No, I would say you don't need a 5 iron at this time. As a beginner, if you're not already taking lessons, I would *highly* recommend you do.

At your current mentioned swing speeds, you're right that you're probably on the edge of being able to generate enough speed to elevate a 5 iron properly.

But lessons will do one of two things:

  • Improve your mechanics so that your swing becomes more efficient and your swing speed increases. If that's the case, it will probably make you the type of swinger that can elevate a 5i.
  • Improve your mechanics so that you become more consistent and your swing speed stays the same. If this is the case, it probably means that you'll want to be looking at hybrids or other options mentioned above.

I'd place money on the first option, that you'll find yourself gaining speed. But as your swing improves, it probably makes it more likely that you'd be in line for a professional fitting to ensure that you're in the right shaft for your new swing. And at that point you'll probably be looking at new clubs, and can buy a set including a 5i.

The only way that the second option will be true, is most likely if you're older, or have physical limitations, such that you can't generate more speed. Again, being a beginner and already in the 77-81 mph 7i range, you're probably limited by technique rather than physical ability. I think it's almost certain that your speed will increase with lessons. But if not, there are options like hybrids available.

Low handicapper here, and I ditched my 5i about 3 years ago for a 5-hybrid. In my late 50's, it's easier to hit, flies higher, and gives me a distinct gap over my 6i. Also ditched the 4i for a 7w. Now that part of my bag looks like this:

6i = 163-168 yards

5h = 180-185 yards

7w = 195-205 yards

Same here, although a bit older and playing at a 4.4.  The older I got, the more my swing speed dropped.  I am currently carrying hybrids down to 30° (6i) and then play 7i-PW, 52°, & 56°.

Also as others have said, I like your realistic attitude toward learning the game.  Take advantage of the technology and lessons to make the game more enjoyable.

You don't need a 5 iron.  In fact, at your ss it could hurt you more than help you for the exact reasons you listed.  You can always substitute with a 7 metal or a hybrid which would serve you well because they are easier to hit out of the rough and launch higher.

No. I'm ditching mine to add an extra wedge. I can use my 7w or 4i (Fli-Hi) -- two clubs that rotate in the bag -- to cover the gap after my 6 iron, which goes about max 200 total for me. With regular 4-irons, or loft-jacked 5-irons, even if you hit them consistently enough to get the distance you want, will often be coming in pretty hot and therefore aren't very useful (relative to a utility or lofted fairway). And those higher distances are easier ones to cover by dialing down your next club in the lineup.

Have you done a fitting on the irons? If so, which shafts would you pick?

One thing to consider: Get 6i-W2 with shaft that feels good, and then get a lighter shaft in the 5i. You would have this as a driving iron if you needed one, and the lighter shaft would help with smoothness of swing and launch.

In their longest iron, players sometimes softstep the shaft, or go lighter weight or softer flex to help launch.

In my prior set of Tour Edge irons, I put a hybrid shaft into the 21-degree 4i and had an excellent driving iron, plus a club for shots into the wind. I mention this, as both the Tour Edge and the T300 irons have low-sole tungsten weighting to help with launch.

(See if the shop  where you're fitted has an intact set of T300 irons on the shelf: If so, ask to hit the 5i to get some idea if it's viable or not.)

At this bridge point, some days you might want a 5i, other days a hybrid, depending on the course you're playing.

Ok, I went to my local shop to get some numbers.  Unfortunately since supply is low everywhere they only had STIFF S300 AMT RED steel in the 2021 T300 irons.  I know I’m not fast enough for stiff so I just wanted to get some numbers to post here.  Will the regular shaft increase my decent angle? The numbers shown are from a 2021 T300 7 iron (29 degrees).

You gotta get properly fit. Those spin numbers, peak height and descent angles are really, really low. Looks like you need a softer tip shaft or a less loft-jacked iron. Consider the T200 if you like Titleist. Also consider lighter irons shafts to pick up a few mph of speed.

Here are some summary figures drawn from Trackman data on Average 7i Swing Speed and related topics. (Hopefully the sprinkling of PGA Tour data in site won't be too confusing.)

For average male golfer, 7i swing speed is ~ 75 MPH, with a carry of about 140 yards. For backspin, a rough target range is 5,000 - 7,000 RPMs. The author attributed the rather large range in part to differing lofts of 7 irons.

And, if the 7i spin is below 5,000 RPM, the golfer will have a difficult time stopping the ball on the green.

image.png.4e63d7d0b22641128bb3bb7666539f56.png

In your case, your spin rate is too low, which leads to 15 or more yards runout once the ball lands. For a midlevel club like the 7i, this will make it difficult to hold greens.

From these numbers, it appears you may have a take it or leave it choice, rather than a quality fitting. A higher launch and more backspin would help your ball performance. (Backspin friction also helps ball get airborne.)

I have just scratched the surface on your number. Hopefully, our veteran clubfitters will have more insightful comments for you.

Will the regular flex r300 help my numbers?  I can try other shafts when I get a chance to go back.

R300 will spin more than the S300 which would be a good thing for you.  Launch could increase a bit, but it's not always a guarantee.
