What to do after a iron fitting and you're not "standard"?

Greetings Everyone!

Sorry if this has been asked before, but when I was searching, couldn't find much info. So I walked into PGA Superstore today and had my first 'dry fitting' (ever) where they measured my wrist position, checked lie angle, etc...

Long story short, they suggested that I am +1 in length, 1 degree upright, and a Stiff-105 shaft. Which was great because my swing felt more natural, was hitting the 7-iron around 200, etc... But then it hit me....

How on earth do I get used clubs with those specs?!

  • Do I buy clubs with the right shaft even though it's standard length, and then add extensions on it and bend them?
  • Do I just buy heads online and build them from scratch?
  • Do I say screw it and buy brand new irons that are way too good for me and may not play enough to get full value out of them?
  • Do I buy something close enough to that and call it good?
  • Just have to sit and watch ebay, callway outlet, etc...?

You have so many options here man.

You can buy a set of component irons and have them built to your specs. You can alter  a regular set of used irons to these specs. You can bite the bullet snd order a set of irons with those specs, with a company that offers those irons as a  stock option.

Cheapest aay is to get a set with those specs and add the extension.

I don't know what irons you're interested in brand or model wise, but if you end up with Pings you can send them in to have them readjusted to be the correct dot color for you and do the shaft extensions and everything for pretty cheap. When I gave an old set of g15s to a buddy he sent them in and had them changed from black dot to green and 1" extensions put in and I think he paid something like $10 a club. You maintain any warranty there is for the club too if the work is done by Ping.

Currently I have the MX-23, which are to most standards probably antiques. Plus there is no marking on the shaft to tell what it is, but my guess it is stock. So I would have to probably drop $300 in the shafts, $100 on the grips, and $80'ish on someone to put them together for me. So at almost $500 just to upgrade my irons, I might as well try to sell mine for $200, and then I'll have $700 for newer irons. Which doesn't help because I still need to update the rest of my bag. 🤑 But the ping idea is tempting. I was actually eye'ing the i200-i210s.

For a big fitting change I'd definitely be on the BST here or on eBay looking for a used set in my new specs before I invested in anything brand new.  Once you get pretty locked in that your fitting is correct then you can look into a new custom set.

It's really simple to learn to reshaft your own irons. I'm a plus 1 inch player, and have done it many times. Also, I highly recommend Maltby clubs from Golfworks, especially the TS1 and TS2, and they'll make them to your specs for very little charge. There's also a few really good direct to consumer clubs like New Level and Sub 70 that will make them custom to your specs for way cheaper than the big names, and they're great clubs.

Used clubs at +1 length isn't that unusual to find actually. The lie can be bent. Iron shafts are mostly very similar as long as you get the right weight.

Unless OP actually gets properly fitted for a specific set of irons, these specs are really just a starting point.  PGATSS says 1 degree upright, but from what starting lie angle?  There is no standard lie angle, so if OP was buying Ping, who is to know if he should get blue dot or green dot, or maybe even black dot.  No real standard length either, so +1" could mean different things.

You could bend any iron head though and the length is easily altered.

Sure, of course, any set can be shortened/lengthened, bent upright or flat, loft adjusted, etc. But OP is still flying a bit blind here as to what his specs actually are. No big deal, I'm sure he'll sort it out.
