For want it’s worth, real forged irons are really necessarily neither punishing nor that much less forgiving, and they provide more feedback to learn.

Forgiveness really helps the better golfer, for whom relatively small differences matter.

Are you good enough to play forgiving clubs?

Tough for me to say at this stage... surely that the G10s are helping me on mishits; I know when I thin them or hit it on the toe and it still gets close to a GIR, where I can try and save it... so 'I'm I good enough' right now, my instinct would say no as I don't pure them enough for my liking, work in progress for sure... but would it help in the long run to get more 'playing' feedback in order to groove my swing - probably (?)...

This might come from the left field but still playing regularly for 2 1/2 years with old Ping G10s that are surely helping with mishits… and my usual miss is a slight pull (even though all my attention is on in-out path, little descending AoA and aggressive pivot) and was matched with a cool guy last week that offered me to play his Mizuno blades off the tee on par3s - and I pured them all (even though it looked to me like I was going at it with knives) and was wondering if the amount of offsets in GI irons might be hurting players with relatively decent swings?

Long story short, ex hockey guy that started to play two years ago regularly (40-50ish rounds/year), decent ball striker (but nothing elite obviously) playing to a 5-6ish cap – got relatively recent driver (G410), 3wood (G425), 3hybrid (Sim2 19*) and wedges (50*: TM MG2 / 54*: RTX / 58*: SM8) … and I’m playing G10s 4-W (46*), efficient but old clubs (especially for WRXers!) … and I’m looking for the general opinion on; worth the move, and if so, what type of irons are we talking about?... I’m still at the improving / grooving state swing wise but relatively consistent carry distances and misses are usually pulls due to an out-in 2-3* path and a matching face, that are baby fades when the face hasn’t closed as much… all ears

Ex hockey player myself, so welcome!

best advice is to go get fit, invest in really learning what performs best for you and your swing. From the sound of things you’ll want to be in a players cavity most likely.

A lot of good advice here and can't go wrong with any of the advice but I would avoid going to get fit at this stage. As you get better your swing will continue to improve and change which could mess up what you were fit into in a short amount of time.

My advice would be to pick up a used set of AP2's (I still use the 714 and they are as good as anything new) or something similar and give those a go. You'll benefit from more distance control and workability over your current set and if you go AP2's (HIGHLY recommended) you will not see much of a difference in the amount of forgiveness you are getting in the the G10's.
