Grip size on tour??

Do most players put extra wraps of tape under standard size grips or do they play midsize, jumbo, etc.?

Thanks!

It's all over the place really. Tiger and Spieth all play a very typical regular size grip with a couple wraps of tape, MC +4 is very common, Bubba Watson and Tony Finau both are 10+ wraps the entire length and their grips look like they're about to explode off the shaft, Bryson uses Jumbo Max grips...

I would say that most use a standard size grip.  There are more midsize out there now than I can remember seeing in the past.  I would think many of the older pro's are going to be using a variety of extra wraps under standard grip.  That being said, there are very few not using a glove and that is a factor.  I know if I was using a glove, I would likely be using a standard grip with +1 wrap.  As I don't, I use a midsize grip in a MCC Align.  If it was another style like the Tour Velvet Mid, there would be an extra wrap or two under that one.

I also do my own grips, compressed air.

My set up isn't near that fancy.  I don't even have a catch tray for the solvent.

It's not that fancy, I assure you. Air compressor with the blower attachment and a good regulator. It has both pros and cons. A grip making contact with the tape and solvent will expand and explode like a f#$%ing gun going off a foot from your face in about 0.72 seconds. I got both a change of pants and a good regulator after that one LOL.

It likely has more to do with grips just being appropriately sized to the hands, versus guys trying to achieve something with grip size....

A lot of the guys out there are like 5'8, with matching sized hands. Regular sized grips practically disappear in my ugly mitts. Midsize +4s just feel right to me like a regular grip would in a smaller set of hands.

I do my own grips sometimes too. I like less taper under the right hand than most grips provide, tried extra wraps to build them up but it's pretty tedious to get it right. Also noticeably affected the club weight. Does anybody still make a reduced taper grip? Lamkin used to (& I use Lamkin grips) but they stopped offering them. I think it was a grip they built for Justin Rose.

Most of the grip companies make reduced taper.  Golf Pride makes different grips with the "Plus4" designation -- basically supposed to simulate extra wraps under the bottom hand, so almost no taper at all.  Lamkin does as well, and some other smaller companies

Thanks! I haven't used anything other than Lamkin Crosslines for many years & haven't played much in the last 2-3 years so it's been awhile since I regripped. Did not know that's what the Plus4 designation meant with Golf Pride.

Lamkin used to offer a Crossline made from their REAL ACE synthetic rubber. It was grey with a red cap & was the best grip I ever used. It was a little tackier & softer than the standard Crossline & was perfect. Going to their website to see if they have something similar.

Exactly. I used to be more of the mindset that it influenced things like clubface rotation and such, and while I still it think it does there are smarter folks than me that have asserted its more about comfort level and grip pressure. Rory and JT have smaller hands, so they use smaller grips. Finau has big ole' basketball mits so he uses huge grips.

For as many different permutations as we see, I think the thing we can point to as being most common on tour is removing a bit of taper. A lot of the time when build up tape is being added, guys are adding +1 or +2 to the bottom hand. Everything else is about size comfort.

I actually got ahold of a shaft built for Rose last year with his signature Lamkin grip on it and it was definitely reduced taper, similar to their current "+2" grips. As mentioned above there are many reduced taper options out there including the Lamkin +2's, Golf Pride +4's, and the Jumbomax non-tapered variety.

Yeah I blew up a Golf Pride grip like a balloon! I wasn't sure how to proceed so I popped it with a razor knife. Lol

I reserve the right to have that bass ackwards.  I use standard grips with standard tape 95% of the time.  May sneak and extra wrap under trail hand if I am feeling flirty.

I can attest to the large grips helping the “handsy” or “flipping” issue.

I went jumbo on all my woods and irons (I have big hands anyway) and I definitely could tell I hit it more with the body and arms.

I left a standard size grip on my gap/sand/lob wedges though… I do think you lose a little feel with the big grips.

I've often wondered this too.  Sometimes it can be tough getting a grip over just 2 or 3 extra pieces of tape, I can't imagine trying 10.  I've not seen them using compressed air on the tour vans in the videos I've seen but it would suprise me if that's how they did it.

You don't have it backward - you just have it wrong.  😆

Just look at Bubba,  he doesn't have any problems being "handsy" with those +10 wraps under the grip.

Sorry though, I don't really mean to put you down.  It is a very old but still very common misconception so not surprising to still see people post that or believe that.

However, the reality is that anything can happen when changing grip size.   Some will match that perception, some will be the complete opposite, some may see no difference what-so-ever.   Everyone has to figure out themselves what changing grip size might do to their swing and ball flight.
