Bandon Weather rain/gear advice JUNE specific

Recommended Posts

I’ve read countless pages of Bandon threads researching this but almost all the topics discuss winter / worst case scenarios.

I’m moving to Bandon to start caddying in June and need somebody to confirm / talk me out of the idea that 10k/10k hundred-dollar waterproof pants/jacket from huk or Columbia or marmot etc won’t be just fine for the occasional storm. Or even better actually for periodic bursts and then warmer weather throughout. The biblical all day monsoon stuff is more in the winter right?

or do I need to buck up and just spend $500+ on goretex/goretex combo and stop being a cheapskate?

lastly what about just going with 10k pants ie seen many mention most pants are okay but absolutely get a goretex or competitor jacket. Again always pertaining to the worst winter weather. Nothing is perfect I’m wondering if one/two day per month I get some leakage and some misery is worth it to have something lightweight and breathable the other 95%

also I’m not seeing these magical deals everyone mentions where you can get top line stuff online for 150 etc and fiddlers green online glance doesn’t have much selection seems I should buy at an outlet before I get there

Any/all advice much appreciated. Once I’ve got money rolling in I can get full goretex suits for other seasons but wondering what will suit me best for June specifically for now? Thanks

The thing about good GoreTex is that you buy it once and it's good for many years. The last thing in the world you want is to be wet and miserable on the golf course.

Check out Function18.com for good deals on Galvin Green.

It's not going to rain this summer; it's going to be hot and smokey.  Buy the 10K jacket, wear loose fitting, synthetic (quick drying) shorts and you'll survive just fine.  Oh and get some N95 masks to ward off the smoke from forest fires.  If I'm wrong the expensive stuff will still be available then.

If you’re carrying bags, the abrasion will rip through lighter/more expensive materials very quickly, and no manufacturer will give you a warranty for that. The Torrentshell has 50D material, pit zips, and is currently 20% off the listed price for members.

Don't I recall the Bandon caddies all have the same rain gear?

They’ve had those Adidas Gore-Tex gear for years.

Just take a shell and nothing nice or fancy. Majority of summer time you will be in your whites. Then just order the stuff they get a deal on and what the other caddies wear. Ask them when you get there, don’t worry about us or our opinion.

You can buy less expensive rain gear and get wet then replace it, or you can buy Gore Tex rain gear and never buy again. There’s a reason all the caddies I’ve seen wear Gore Tex. Plus it has a lifetime guarantee, most other rain gear is only warranted for 1 to 2 years.

Hopefully you have not purchased anything yet.

I caddied out at Bandon for 8 years through high school & college and you wouldn't even be allowed to wear outside rain gear. If I remember right it was just given to you when you paid your yearly caddie fee but it may have been a small purchase on top I'm not sure. Either way it's sold at or under cost, very cheap -- great stuff though. I've got like 6 or 7 sets of "Looper" raingear taking up space in my closet, you end up with A LOT if you're out there a while lol
