Need help finding a new ball! (Mid handicap)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, my game is starting to improve and I think I’m ready to make the jump from my Srixon soft feels to a better ball that could help get me closer to breaking 80! Here’s a few of my specs:

 Driver speed: 95mph

7 iron distance: 160-165

current ball: Srixon soft feel

what I need the most help with:

around the green I struggle to control my spin. The soft feel would roll out quite a bit and living in Texas our greens are firm and fast so I need some spin to give me a better shot at making pars

Not trying to break the bank so anything around $25-$35 would be ideal!

any recommendations are appreciated!

Give the Callaway Supersoft a try or the Wilson Duo.  Both provide good compression that those of us with slower swing speed need and I've found that both have good stopping power on the green.

The next steps are all north of $35 a dozen US.  Maxfli Tour (not Tour X) is another option that I like.  But the Supersoft has been finding it's way in my bag more and more lately.  At $20-$25 a dozen, it's hard to go wrong.

The easiest answer to this is to go buy a sleeve of all the "near Tour level" balls from each of the major manufacturers (Titlelist, TM, Callaway, Srixon, Bridgestone), and take them to the practice green. Hit chips and pitches side by side, and see which one works best for you.

You might even want to add in a sleeve of ProV1s or equivalent, to compare YOUR greenside performance with those against their mid-price cousins.

Investing in basically a dozen balls a sleeve at a time will let you figure out what works best with your game. If you like it around the green, any of those ilk will give you sufficient distance off the tee.

Kirkland Sigs from Costco. Urethane on the cheap, should spin plenty for you and keep costs down. If they truly help your game, maybe branch out to pricier brands/models as needed.

I second the Callaway SuperSoft. I found 5 of them today during my round. A guy a couple or groups ahead must been losing them every couple of shots.

I tried one for kicks and giggles and it surprised me. Soft and long with a decent amount of spin.

Since you already play a ball in the Srixon family, I would check out the Q Star Tour ($34.99 retail).  I have similar swing stats as you and I've gotten on well with the Q Star Tour this year.  IMO it's probably the best ball from the major ball manufacturers for the moderate swing speed, mid handicapper.  TaylorMade Tour Response would be another decent one but they raised their price on those this year to $39.99 and their cover isn't as durable as the QST.

Nothing short of a possibly the Bridgestone B XS is going to spin better than the KIRKLAND ball. At the unbelievable price Costco sells them for, in my opinion it's a no-brainer to buy a double dozen and find out for sure if you will benefit from a really spinny urethane ball.

If for some reason you don't like the Costco ball then you can branch out into trying more expensive similar type balls but that's the perfect starting point.

My vote would be Oncore Elixr or Maxfli Tour. Both have great feel and fly pretty straight for me. My stats are similar to yours. I have been playing the Elixr for about 4 years and sprinkle in the Maxfli. Both offer urethane and decent spin and control. I list is $29.99 and Maxfli has specials 2 dozen for $60.

If more spin is the goal, definitely try the Kirkland. If it fits your game, there isn't a better deal in golf balls.

If you find it spinning too much or you lose distance, then step back and try something else.

For your needs I like 3 piece non-urethane, even for myself.  Still provides additional spin into the green, but not overly expensive as most urethane balls are.  Unfortunately there are not many offerings in this tier.

Maxfli Trifli; Callaway Diablo Tour; Callaway Hex tour (Costco); some of the RZN balls.

The Kirkland ball is a reasonable option based on price also.  Maybe see if you can get a ball or a sleeve to try.

You definitely do need a urethane ball for spin.

1. Maxfli Tour and/or Tour-X  2 for $60 ($30/doz).  The X supposedly more spin than the Tour (I've played the Tour and like it)

2. Kirkland is spinny.  Depending on your driver spin you may lose about 5 yds. on drives (I don't notice a difference.  MY SS is around 95)

3. Vice Pro or Pro Plus ($28.99/doz w/5 doz. purchase)

4. Snell

5. Srixon Q Star

For a $30 investment you can get 2 dozen Kirkland.  I would give them a serious try.  Best urethane ball for the $$ out there with good performance.  Especially from 150  yds in.

I'd recommend the Wilson Staff Triad even though at $39.95 it's a little above your price range. It's 85 compression, very good spin numbers, and a soft putter feel.

I've been messing around the house with them, putting (they do seem to hold a line better) and chipping on carpet. As far as chipping goes, on a 6 ft' chip shot you can hear it spin when it hits the carpet and rolls out anywhere from 1 - 2 ft. shorter than the other cheap 2 pc. balls I have.
This will more than likely be my go to ball for warmer weather.
