Over the Top Drills

Recommended Posts

I've been a lifelong over the topper/steep angle slicer and have just battled through it over the years - the rest of my game has just picked up the slack and I've lived with it.

Gotten back into it after a few years off and I am really trying to dial in my swing and game. Golf means different things to different people, but if I'm not playing well or can't compete its flat out not fun for me. Good for me is low 80's with dialed-in being high 70's. I always have a few blow up holes (Triple/Quad) that really ruin the round. These last few outings I've really been chunking my partial swings/wedges, taking chunks of sod, and been battling the mental aspect of the game.

I really feel like with the right practice and committing to the game, I can get into the single digit handicap range. Thats my goal.

I've looked through prior posts and used the goog and am debating on lessons, but would like to try to figure it out myself before bowing out.

For those that are in my over-the-top/slice world or have worked through these challenges - I'm just curious what everyone's favorite drills are or what worked for them?

Thanks for any help/advice/personal experience!

Be careful with this.  Most golfers start out over the top, then those that fix it do so by dumping under due to someone telling them to move the swing path out to right field.  I'm just saying be very careful what you listen to when it comes to this.

Alignment sticks. One, or the other, or both. You need to start the ball to the right of the stick in front of you. Doesnt matter where the shot goes, just start to the right of the stick. The stick behind you is to force a shallower swing path and not allow you to come OTT.

As alluded to already, nothing is magic fairy dust. Its possible to engrain terrible habits if you are not doing this correctly. Sliding the hips forward and dumping the right shoulder to force getting under and swinging out is probably worse than your OTT move.

Mostly PING clubs, with TaylorMade woods.

No one here can tell u how to fix your issues with out seeing what's causing the problem.

Spend a few bucks and take some lessons..

They are worth it in the long run if u are willing to put in the time and energy to rectify the problem

The biggest thing I see is most people don't want to put in the work.. they want to get a quick tip and the magic ferry dust is going to make it all better...

Think of it this way.. how many times have u swung the club the wrong way.. it takes time to forget the bad

I had a nasty over the top and my coach cleaned up a few things and gave me a stick drill.. swing the club under the stick..

I must have broke a half a dozen sticks by coming over the top..

A thousand balls later and I have a decent neutral to inside swing path with the odd over the top that still sneeks in there

Now we are working on the other issues in my swing 😆

Thanks for all the replies/input/suggestions.

I realize it’s not an overnight fix and something that will need to be worked out of my swing. I didn’t really think about it possibly making my swing worse or introducing additional bad habits, but definitely makes sense.

@scooterhd2 I was trying to visualize how my club should be coming down and that drill might help me a bit on getting some muscle memory on the correct plane. I’ve been debating putting my phone on a tripod and getting some video of my swing so I can get a better idea where my swing is coming off track. Appreciate the idea!

I’m thinking it might be worth it to just get a lesson and have a few specific things to work on. I don’t want to completely change anything but also want to make sure I’m moving forward and making progress and not throwing stuff at the wall and hoping it sticks.

Thanks again - really do appreciate the personal experiences and keeping my expectations grounded.
