If you had $300 - which putter are you going to buy?

Cliff David

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys, this is my first post.  I want to upgrade my putter.  I'm currently using an Odyssey White hot OG #5.

Would you guys recommend buying a brand new putter or would you try to find a nice high end putter on FB marketplace or Ebay? ( I understand there are fake putters out there and it's part of the risk)

I really just want a nice blade putter, I'm leaning towards a relatively heavier putter.

Thanks for any feedback.

I would go to a golf store, particularly one that has a large stock of used trade ins, and test everything. Putting is so personal that you have to try everything to see what you like or don't like. You may find that you putt better with a $50 putter over a Scotty Cameron. Just test test test.

The Mizuno OMOI would be a nice one to try.

edit: Oops. Just noticed that they're $350 new, a little above your budget. But they are well made and on the heavier side so worth consideration.

If you're wanting something "heavy" I'd stay away from looking at older, used putters (think pre-2007ish Scotty Cameron and similar brands). The heads on those tended to be much lighter than today's models.

I'll second what another posted said and just try out a bunch to find what fits your eye and your stroke best. The last thing you want to do is buy a new putter and then have it not work out the way you'd hoped.

First off welcome to the forum!

As mentioned go to a sporting goods store/golf store and try as many as you can in the style or brand you prefer.

Take that information and go to eBay and purchase the putter you want. Trust me, on eBay you’ll find many, many preowned putters from folks that did as you are seemingly going to do, take a suggestion on a putter, buy it and find you don’t like it or it doesn’t fit your eye or swing stroke.

I recently  purchased a $450.00 putter for $185 on eBay. I had previously narrowed my selection and I knew what I wanted so I got a near perfect club in new condition for an excellent price at less than half the price of new. Best thing is you don’t like it you can easily resell it.

I'd get the Mizuno M-craft 4, wide blade with the short slant neck. Comes with a beauty headcover and I believe the weight kit comes with them?... In the silver or black.

Almost forgot. This Maltby putter head is 375g and feels really nice. I had one built by them with a KBS One Step shaft and my choice of grip for less than $200.

I think you should just go putt with a bunch of different putters.  I know it's easy to say I want something heavier but if you go from a hot faced odyssey like your OG 5 to a heavy putter, it could be completely different ends of the scale as far as Motion of inertia created from your putting stroke.  (ie, same stroke will roll out 10' for the odyssey but only 5' for another putter).  That's just random numbers to make my point.

Side bar, you could add a bunch of lead tape to the sole of that putter to add weight, or find heavier weights if they make them.  Easy fix for more weight.

Don't fall for that ! I have a dozen putters, the only one that drains putts is the Scotty Cameron. 👍

If you're scratch or better, a change of putter might make a difference...the last .5%.

But let's face it, in a putting contest, you could have your Cameron and Tiger would kick your butt with a miniature golf putter : )

If it was me, I would save up to get a Scotty Phantom X 5 or 5.5.  I wouldn’t be happy if I settled for something, instead of getting what I liked/wanted or made me better, whether that was mentally or factual.

If I had 300 for myself, I would probably get a previous year model Bettinardi BB-1f.

If I went new, probably a 2021 Ping Anser 4. Really depends on if you want milled or insert.

Based on your criteria of a heavier blade, I will mention a used Evnroll. ER2 or ER1.2 should fit. Not sure if it's better than the Mizunos, but quite good.

300 dollars... blade putter.

a bullseye putter (Titielist or the McGregor fang version, John Letters Goose, the WIlson Agusta... the titleist is the lighest of the bunch), or a McGregor Tommy Armour IMG 5 or a IM 5 (L blade) , or the Wilson 8813 putter or a Japanese copy of (also L blade but more heft towards the end)

All of those are on ebay.... prob can buy all of them for sub 50 to test, then buy the unused one once you figure out what you want.

The trick is housing is so expensive I buy putters and make shelter from the boxes. Also I've been good we're almost 6 months into 2022 and no customs ordered. But the last of the 2021s will be here shortly.

If it’s new, one of the Mizuno first generation (non OMOI). I’ve seen new ones still in shops. High quality milling , great Lamkin grips, and adjustable weights. $299 plus tax.
Or something from the Ping 2021 line. $279 plus tax for classic shapes but with  modern weighting, a classic grip, and a really good headcover.
I’ve got two Mizunos and the 2021 Anser and all three are great putters.
If used, just about anything that’s non boutique or collectible. Lots of lightly used off the rack Camerons and Bettinardis for around that price.

I would say your best bet is to go with a used Scotty Cameron, can't go wrong with a scotty especially since it is the best on the market every year and definitely look 10 times better than anything else out there.

So you say. You think pretty highly of a unoriginal bedazzled copy 😏 from someone who has never made on original product in his life.

But hey you do you……
