3 Wood Shaft Thoughts

WhatThe

Recommended Posts

I had the same Ventus Black/Blue combo last year for my driver and 3 metal.  Worked quite well for me.  I like a low/low shaft for driver, but prefer something that launches a little higher and spins more in my 3 metal so I can hit it off the deck when I need too.  The extra spin also seems to help a bit with dispersion off the tee although that could be the product of loft.

I ended up with the black 6X in driver, black 7X in 3 and 5 woods.

With the black being a stiffer profile throughout, I am assuming you prefer the low launch? I have a very aggressive upward AoA and really wanted to keep launch and spin down which is why I went with it in the driver.

+1 , low low in the driver but like more spin in the FW woods. I use Ventus blk/Tensei white in the driver and GD-IZ in the 3 wood, experimenting with a DI in the 5 wood.

I just prefer the stiffer feel. I can launch them low or high.

I didn’t like the softer handle of the blue. If I wasn’t playing black 7X in my fairways, it would be the red 8X with a healthy amount of tipping.

Interesting, I do like the feel of the black, but I am just not there yet in terms of controlling my launch with FW's off the deck.

Diamana TB is a solid choice from MCA. With the right tipping and flex it’s awesome. Not too spinny and gets a great launch window without ballooning

Played a VB 6x in driver for years with great results.  Naturally tried a 7x in 3W but was too low/low off the deck (great off the tee). Switched to VB 6S and got the flight I wanted but can get squirrely if I overswing it.

Additionally, switched to TRONO 65x in the driver which increased my  launch and carry but it didn’t translate into 3W (launched too low and/or required too much effort to make it work).

I had the TB before making the switch to the ZF.  Launch was acceptable, but it was spinning too much.  Went to the ZF which is a modified blue board and it had a flatter trajectory and less spin.  Just goes to show our delivery into the ball can affect the way the shaft affects the shot.

Currently play Ventus Black 7X in driver and Blue 7X in 3 wood.  Have trouble with toe strikes with Blue.  Thought about going Black in 3 wood as well, but will be experimenting with an 8X Blue TR.  My understanding is the benefit launch of the Blue with tip of the Black.

I think the Atmos goes criminally overlooked here on WRX. Very similar feel to the Ventus but just a touch less stout and maybe a little higher launching (in the black anyway).

I think the TR is a great option for 3 metal.  There's more stability and and less left in it for me compared to the Blue.

I agree on Atmos.  Such a good shaft.  Atmos black in driver for me but the blue x in a fairway with extra tipping was incredible!

I’m also a big fan of the smoke yellow in a fairway.  Such a smooth feeling shaft but not soft.

I am currently gaming two three woods and no driver.  First is a Stealth Plus Rocket with a Ventus TR 8TX second is a Stealth Plus @ 15.75* with a Ventus Black 8TX/Ventus Red 9TX.  The rocket head is solely a teebox club with the other being a good tee shot club on shorter holes and great off the deck.  I have not noticed any stopping issues with the black 8TX.  The Red 9TX seems to launch a touch higher and spin a little more but nothing that makes me feel like it is far superior in terms of playability into a par 5.

Bottom line is test whatever you're able to because what you might think wouldn't work just might.  My $.02
