Chipping Technique

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

So I have been struggling this year chipping. Especially in that 'just off the green' 5-15 ft. range. A lot of chunks and lot of blades across the green and a LOT of frustration. Chipping is hard for me to practice because my range only has a putting green so it has always been something I have been extremely up and down with. Im down right now lol badly.

The other day when I played, I tried to actually chip with my 50* wedge with the face closed so the shaft was leaning really far forward off my front foot. Almost like hitting a punch shot, but off your front foot. It worked great. I hit 4-5 of my best chips of the year. I feel like it forced me to follow through and it was much easier to come down and sweep the ball. It resulted in a bunch of easy great contact instead of chunks/thin.

I also noticed when I chip with the shaft leaning forward with a closed face, the ball has this perfect little arc on it. It gets like 5 feet off the ground and rolls for about 10 yards on the greens. Its not a flop shot or a bump+run, but something perfectly in-between.

My question is, is that a thing? Chipping with your shaft forward or is that horrible technique? I always thought it was supposed to be neutral but I just have found it so frustrating trying the whole 'use a putter stroke and pop the ball up in the air' thing everybody tells you to do. That was not working for me this year, at all. If I kept my arms locked I would blade it across the green, if I got too 'wristy' to pop it up in the air then it would chunk.

I consider myself a good chipper and from right off the green 15 feet from the hole i play a 60 almost behind my stance, so the shaft is way leaning forward and put my putter swing on it, pop just on the green a turn it into a putt. Around the green my shaft is usually leaning forward the farther I get from the green the more upright my shaft gets, closer to the green more shaft lean, helps me to control where it lands and teh spin

good, so Im not crazy then? lol IDK why I decided to one time close the face down and lean the shaft forward--but I did, and after 9 chunks and 4 blades across the green, I put the first attempt I did probably 5ft from the pin from 10 yards off the green. It works great if you have a lot of green to play with because the ball does roll a bunch doing this.

I really struggle not getting my wrists into chips, especially if the ball is just off the green and the pin is close. I always am fighting the natural instinct not to 'flip' at the ball with all wrists in order to pop it up in the air and get it to stop.

Now, I still have no clue in the world how guys get the ball to take 1 or 2 bounces and just completely stop. I dont understand how that is physically possible lol Dont you have to get super wristy for backspin?

shaft lean should keep the wrists from breaking, the key is to not let the head get in front of the hands. To get it to stop quick as you say you need to get good at your chipping and pick it right off the ground and it will put enough spin on the get it to check up, it will take time though

This works wonders for people struggling.  I have seen a few buddies follow this and get much better around the green.

Practice using trail hand/arm only to learn proper release and how not to flip.  Most of the time the flip comes from having no pivot at all.  You have to get your upper body into it.  It's a really small pivot but so helpful in control.  Master this small pivot and hand control for short chips and it will help you in your longer chips/pitches as well.

Also, the part of standing closer and standing up the shaft more, get the heel of the club a bit off the ground...very important.
