Bend's 2022, 2023 Golf Log

Recommended Posts

Sightseeing with the wife today. Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and lunch in Custer, SD. Buffalo Blonde Ale was pretty good. Eating lunch at the Buglin Bull. The bourbon siracha wings were awesome with a nice kick. Many of the dining establishments appear to be closed on Sundays.

Unfortunately I was not able to play at Spearfish Canyon CC this morming due to rain. Oh well. We like it here so we'll be back. We ate dinner at Killian's in Spearfish and it was very good and walking distance from our cottage. We stopped at Wall Drug (a giant junk store) and The Badlands National Park. Driving -800 miles today.

I have a kitchen pass next week so I think that I am going to make the 3 hour drive to French Lick, Indiana to play the Donald Ross Course and Sultan's Run. The Pete Dye Course at French Lick is $350, not a pill I want to swallow. Too many other courses I desire to see first. I go back to work in less than 2 weeks so it will be tougher for me to get a lot more courses in. Right now I have these on the radar for August and September:

Sultan's Run (IN)

Donald Ross Course at French Lick (IN)

Dayton CC (OH)

Maysville CC (KY)

Leatherstocking (NY)

Links of Hiawatha (NY)

Mark Twain GC (NY)

UK Wildcat Course (KY)

Avalon Lakes GC (OH)

Tough to find a place to go with rain seemingly rolling in all over. I don't want to go down South as I orefer to head down there when it starts getting colder here. Grabd Rapids, Michigan was on the radar but rain there on the days I needed to go. Looks like ai'll hit up Michigan next sunmer, I have not golfed there since 2017. Tomorrow afternoon I'll be playing Fuzzy Zoeller's Covered Bridge GC in Indiana right across the Ohio River from Louisville. Wednesday is a 36 hole day before driving home; Donald Ross Course at French Lick AM and Sultan's Run GC in the PM near Jasper, Indiana. Should be a good 2 days. I can play next week on Thursday and then it's back to work.

Made it to Louisville, well New Albany, Indiana right across the river.

Covered Bridge GC, owned by Fuzzy Zoeller. $79 with cart and a logo ball. Conditions were great, course is probably overwatered. Zoysia grass fairways which are awesome, but I wish it was fast and firm. I hit a few low, stinger drives and did not get the roll out that I expected. This course is fairly narrow on most holes. Nothing exciting about it, it was a much tighter, Art Hills "like" course. It does not even crack my top 80 played out of 551. No signature holes here except maybe holes 9 and 18 which are both par 5's and are joined by a double green.

I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the Ross course and Sultans Run. Personally, I think Sultans Run is a ton of fun. My biggest gripe is the par 3s being fairly repetitive all playing downhill and 3 with forced carrys over water.

It doesn’t sound like you’re going much further north but everyone I talk with loves the Pfau course at IU.

I played the Pfau course back at the end of April. I enjoyed it a lot. I should probably add in the pics, I don't think I started this blog until late May, early June.

Played the Donald Ross Course at French Lick, Indiana today. Super hilly and difficult and due to all the uphill shots, it plays longer than the card. Pefect conditions. It was brutally hot and humid, so much so that I cancelled my afternoon round. It was tough just trying to hold the club while swinging. This course, although walkable, would be brutal in the humidity. First class operation all around, great staff and great service. $125 with cart, they also got me for a logo ball, a personally engraved ball marker and a super nice putter cover. Stuff in the shop had decent prices for a resort course. Greens are sloped quite a bit and were pretty undulating here. Lots of false fronts as well. I ate lunch after my round in their bar and had a tasty, fried green tomato BLT. I'll get to Sultan's Run another time in the future. I lost 8 golf balls today and it really killed my score, mad. All of the par 3's except for last 115 yarder were really tough here, lots of long, forced carries. Overall, a really nice vibe at this place. Pull hooks really suck, going back for a quick lesson!

Great write up. Post some tips after your lesson. Those pull hooks are devastating and good score killers.

Pull hooks suck, it's coming over the top and having quick hands. Snap! I just need to find some time to go to the range, which I never have. At this point, I'll shoot high 80's, low 90's if I don't lose any golf balls. I wish for the days when I had a nice fade and not the draw I play now.

Play time is over, back to work tomorrow. Next week I'll try and get down to Lexington, KY and play the other University of Kentucky courses that I have not played, The Wildcat Course. I played the Big Blue course a few years back. I'll be lucky to get in 3 more new courses in August as my twins start high school next week. My daughter is in marching band and my son made the JV soccer team. That means lots of running around! With 42 new courses played already, I am still hopeful I can get to 64 (or more) NEW courses played in 2022. I still have a trip to New York, Pinehurst and Florida in December.

Early Fall I am hoping to play Mark Twain GC (Elmira NY - Donald Ross), The Links of Hiawatha, Leatherstocking GC in Cooperstown, Oneonta CC and maybe 9 more holes (Soaring Eagles) on the drive home if time allows.

Pinehurst trip (November) will be (a few cheapies in there as I am broke from travel) Asheboro GC 9 holes, Sanford Municipal, Mid South Club, PH #3 (Not ready to stay at Pinehurst Resort so I can play #2 and #4; they require an overnight stay now in order to play them) and maybe Pinewood CC in Asheboro (open to non members on Mondays) since I go right past it on the way home. If I am able get down to Pinehurst/Southern Pines twice I'll add in both Pinewild Courses (Magnolia and Holly) as well. I really love the Southern Pines area and it's only about a 7 hour drive from Cincinnati. I have played most of the courses around the Pinehurst area, but none of the resort courses. I'll play #2, and #4 last when I exhaust all other options in the area.

I could also possibly go back to Huntsville, AL and play the other Army Redstone Arsenal Course as well as the 2 RTJ courses that are there as well. Next year I'll play at Farm Links and a few other RTJ courses in the Spring.

Augusta in November is another option; Forest Hills GC, Aiken GC, Palmetto CC (if I can get on) and maybe the RTJ designed course at Fort Gordon.

Florida: Staying 2 nights at Streamsong in December and I will play Red and Black (I played the Blue back in June). Streamsong is a great place to stay, although it is not cheap. Also, Arcadia Municipal, Osprey Point, Pinecrest, Delray Beach and maybe a few other Donald Ross munis; New Smyrna Beach and Palatka Municipal. I was hoping to play the Gasparilla Golf Club on Boca Grande, but they are totally full and that course/resort requires a pricey stay as well. Hard to believe there is a recession going on when all of these $350+ or more per night places (more for the golf) are all booked way out in advance. Gasparilla is only open in the Winter, so I'll have to reserve that a year out. We go to Florida every December since the in laws live near Fort Myers. Coral Gables Biltmore near Miami is also on my list to play, but it may have to wait until 2023.

I want to play a bunch of these golden era courses:

https://floridahistoricgolftrail.com/courses/

I might also attempt (if the wife allows me) a few courses around Hilton Head area, the Parris Island Marine Corps course and maybe another TBD. Possibly Old South Golf Links.

I have a few other day trips planned to play Wasioto Winds in KY and few other KY courses I have been scouting out (Univ of Louisville, and the new Park Mammoth course).

No way I'll get 64 NEW courses in for 2023, but 40-50 is a good estimate.

  • 3 weeks later...

Course number 44 in 2022 and 553 overall. Have not touched a golf club for a bit over 3 weeks, the start of the school year is hectic for me. Snuck out today and played Maysville CC in Maysville, Kentucky. Old school, formerly private country club built in 1925. The course was not all that great, has postage stamp greens. So small that you better aim 10 yards in front of the green. You can tell they are not using any, or minimal pesticides here. Not in terrible shape mind you, but not great either. Some greens were diseased and some were not, go figure. I paid less than $24 with a cart for 18 holes, which was the only reason I played here so I can't really complain. I have been spoiled with some of the awesome courses I have played this year so far. Very few places to play golf in this area along the Ohio River. George Clooney is from Maysville, Kentucky.

I signed up for a round at Flossmoor CC near Chicago in 2 weeks through the Walking Golfer's Society. After that, I am headed to New York to play Ravenwood, Leatherstocking, Links of Hiawatha, Soaring Eagles and Mark Twain GC. I was hoping to play Binghamton CC (private) but they do not allow outside play. Bummer.

Oy. I wish them best of luck with that. I played Black in Janu and there were plenty of tee times available. I imagine mid summer is wide open. They think they'll get more play with a resort stay requirement? Glad I checked off the three courses.

Next weekend I'll be headed up to Chicago's South side and play Flossmoor CC and since Ravisloe CC is only about 2 miles down the street I'll squeeze a round in there as well. Should be a nice 36 hole day!

Well my 36 hole day at Flossmoor CC and Ravisloe CC was ruined. Sucked as I drove up to Chicago, only to drive straight back 4.5 hours. I finally caught Covid-19 at work. Surprised it took me this long for me to catch it as I work at a school. Hopefully I feel better soon, as I have a trip planned for next weekend.

Have NOT played a round for a long time. Sucks. Getting Covid (1st time) ruined my Chicago weekend as well as ruined going to New York to play. This weekend I was invited to play Dayton CC (Donald Ross), which I have never played. Now the only courses around Dayton I still need to play are NCR North and South.

I still have a few other trips planned:

North GA/NC:

Sequoyah National

Old Toccoa Farm

maybe one or two more

August, GA

Aiken GC

Forest Hills GC

Fort Gordon

Maybe one more

Florida (Nov)

Tarpon Springs

Clearwater CC
maybe one more

Florida (Dec)

Streamsong Red

Streamsong Black

Arcadia Municipal

Delray Beach GC

Osprey Point GC

Old Corkscrew

maybe 2-3 more

I have a few other courses that I am going to try and get in as well in Kentucky; UK Wildcat Course and Waisato WInds GC

Finally was able to play a round of golf today! With going back to work, getting Covid at work and also having a lipoma removed from my back, September turned out to be a crappy month with zero golf! Today I played Dayton CC, which is a private, late 1800's Donald Ross course. The greens were stupid fast. The course has some hilly holes and some flat holes. I liked the course, but honestly it does not break into my top 80 courses played. Dayton CC was my 200th Ohio course played and my 554th overall. The picture of the framed golf clubs was pretty neat, it had one personal golf club for each head pro that has worked at the club.

Great thread.  DM me sometime as I belong to NCR and can help you out with the two courses.   May be next spring as I have some vacation and work travel coming up if that’s ok.

Took a 1/2 personal day on Friday to play Urbana CC. Should be good! This weekend I may try to sneak out for 18 holes somewhere in Kentucky on Sunday.

Took a 1/2 day off yesterday and was invited to play Urbana CC in Urbana, Ohio. Original 9 holes designed in 1922 by Pete Dye's Dad, Paul. Later nine holes by PB Dye. Fun golf course, played fast and firm too. Greens were fast. Back nine is pretty tight, Tips out around 6900, but we played it at around 6100. Nice elevation changes throughout the golf course. Urbana CC is a course with emough variety that I could play here all the time. All around the course it's pretty flat, just cornfields. Urbana is a cool little town too. Luckily for me I was able to stop at my favorite chinese place, China Cottage in Springboro, on the way home. Urbana CC was my 201st Ohio course and my 555th overall. Sorry no beers Arg!

Got up early and drove down near Lexington, KY and played Thoroughbred GC. Have played "almost" everything in Lexington now, but not Idlehour CC which is VERY private. Someday. Thoroughbred was a fun course with some room off the tee on most holes. Not long from the tips ~6600, I played it around 6100. The zoysia fairways are already dormant. Did not see any sandtraps at all on the course. Cart paths were in bad shape pretty much all over. Greens held everything and were nice. Played 18 right at 2 hours and would have been less if the last twosome would have let me play through. Clowns. I paid $48 on Golfnow.  In honor of Arg heading to Kansas City for great BBQ, I stopped at Red State BBq (right down the road from Kearney Hill Links) and ate a quick lunch. It was OK, I have had better ribs.

I am going to go backwards and add in the courses that I started playing back in February. I did not start this thread until the end of May.

Charleston Municipal, awesome golf course here. Great vibe. Perfect walking course as well. Great green complexes that really add character to the course. VERY busy place. Definitely find the time to play "The Muni" if you have your sticks and are near Charleston.
