Apex UW 19° vs 21°

Recommended Posts

Hey Wrx, thought I’d see what the community has on Apex UW and if anyone has hit the 19° against the 21°. I currently play a G425 3 hybrid at 19° but it’s too low spin. I could simply increase the loft with the sleeve, but it sits closed to my eye. Has anyone found the UW 21° to be a good fit? I’ve read about the 19° being too low spin. Driver swingspeed is 117-120, but am not a high spin player. Thanks guys!

I have the 21* and I hit it 230 stock shot, it replaces my 4 iron as it comes in steeper and with more spin

I have a 19* and its my " 5 wood". My 22* is a Ping G425 Hybrid. To me, the UW feels like hitting a fairway wood while the Ping more iron like . I really like the Apex UW , a solid performer! I actually like the Apex better than the G425.

I had the 19* for a little while but I couldn’t seem to hit it any further than my Apex Pro 20*. I don’t have any hard data, but it’s possible the UW spun more for me than the hybrid. 🤷🏼‍♂️

At 21* you could always go with the Maltby HY-Way.

its weight adjustable, you can have them sort through heads to get a 20-21-22* and it is .355 so you can use a wood shaft

lie read a bunch of reviews, but haven’t hit the Callaway UW, Maltby HY-Way or the Cleveland offerings.

its a cheap experiment, especially if you have a heavier wood shaft you like lying around ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I have both in my bag. Use them as my 3 and 4 hybrids. Love ‘em. I hit them dead a** straight. High ball flight and they don’t come in as hot as my Callaway XR hybrids did so I can hold greens quite a bit better. I don’t think I know enough about golf equipment to truly understand why, but these work very well with my swing.

If your a low spin player, stay away from the UW.  I’m a low spin player, driver swing speed in the low 120’s, had a 17* UW for a minute, could barely keep it in the air.  Spin hovered around 2000, saw one shot dip as low as 1400.  Would be an ideal tee club if I played links courses in the wind though.

Didnt get to hit the 19 but did have the 17 and 21. 17 was very low spin in the 2600 window. The 21 had the same shaft as the 17 but actually was a very playable 4500 spin in that spot

Overall I do think the UW is a low spin head but the 21 wasnt low spin for me. It had great ball speed and would give me ideal gapping before 4i

That’s why I’d loft up with this club. Yes it’s a weight forward head design and lower spinning (than a fairway) but it’s also probably higher spinning than a hybrid of same loft. It truly is “in between” a hybrid and a fairway wood.

For OP, I have hit both the 19 and 21. I first hit 19 on the range (no monitor) I liked it but immediately thought “this isn’t what I’m looking for”. It was too flat and too close to my 4wood. Grabbed a 21 and it’s exactly what I was looking for. Which for me was a 3hybrid replacement after I tried a 7w first. 7w was too spinny and high for me. 3hy was fine but inconsistent and this UW sits right in between as my 225 club.

I gap it in between a 4w (16.5 degrees) and a 4hy (23 degrees).

what distances are you seeing with you 19 and 21 uw? please reference driver clubhead speed.😅

Driver; 290yd (112 ss, 162 ball speed)

UW 17 = 3 wood; 265yd

UW 19 = 5 wood = 3 Hyb; 240yd

UW 21 = 7 wood = 5iron; 210yd

YMMV, on course results not guaranteed 😛

They are very shaft dependent.  They are low if you pair them with a too stiff, low spin shaft for me at least.

I put Diamana ZF in my 19 and 21 and love them.  I play the 21 @ -0.75 short and the 19 @ -0.25” short.

Trying to find the right shaft for a 17 currently.

Tried the Tensei AV Raw White and Diamana TB and hit both too low.

Next up is a Graphite Design Tour AD IZ.  I have played it before in driver and 3w and launched high with high spin so I’m curious how the UW 17 will pair with it as that is what I am looking for.

Stock RDX Smoke Black did not work for my swing in any loft.

To pile on, this is not your club.  It's a low spin rocket launcher.  If you struggle with the G425 at 19*, I would suggest the 22* and opening it up to 20.5* vs. closing the 19* to 20.5*.  The more loft something has, even if you make it into the exact same head, will always spin a little more than taking the less lofted head and moving it up.  Some other suggestions if you are tired of the look of the 425 are the TSi2 and Mizuno CLK hybrids.  The CLK especially is a bit of a sleeper that gets very little love but it spins almost exactly like an iron with great ball speed, comes with a myriad of free, high quality, heavy shafts for someone with your speed (even a steel option with the Project X-U), and each head is adjustable 2* in either direction of the stated loft.

If you are ordering new from Callaway you can have them bend it to 20* (or 19/22/etc.) at purchase.  I play mine at 20*.

They will bend it 1 degree, but not more.  They have hosel breakage issues when they try to do more than that.  Interestingly, the Tour Dept. at Callaway has a different metal hosel on all their woods, so they can bend it to whatever those players desire.   I just ordered a 19 degree, bent to 18 degrees.  I am looking for a club that I can elevate off the fairway, to replace my 3,4, or 5 fwy.  I have tried all 3 this year and just struggle to hit these consistently.  After seeing all the great reviews on this club, I decided to give it a go.  It comes tomorrow.  They will also bend it 1 degree flat as well.

I’m on the Callaway website and I’d love to buy a UW 19 degree vent to a 20 degree. How the heck do I alter the stock club on the site?  21 degree looks like it’s a lengthy wait to buy.

Call them and speak to a rep
