Mc vs WD settle a bet

Rigby48

Recommended Posts

Two guys bet head to head Scheffler vs Woods in PGA Championship.

Woods made the cut but then WD after Saturday. On the leaderboard woods is now in last place while Scheffler missed the cut which ranks above the WD.

Now there is debate as to who won the bet. Both concede woods had a better score through Friday but on the leaderboard Scheffler shows as CUT with a score of +6.  Woods shows as MC with no score.

Who won the bet?

WDs always show up at the "bottom" regardless of when they withdraw. It's because they technically didn't finish the tournament. A guy could have a 50 shot lead going into the 72nd hole, withdraw over a 1 inch putt on the last hole, and he's still going to show up at the bottom of the leaderboard.

If I had to vote, I'd say the guy who took Tiger won seeing as how he beat Scheffler for the two rounds they both completed.

FYI Scheffler was +6 through the first 36 holes not -6...

IMHO Tiger outperformed Scheffler. Tiger made the cut. Scheffler didn't.

Whoever took Tiger won the bet.

That’s not the question though.

Tiger was placed below him in the official results, therefore the Sheffler bettor wins.

If we are looking at "official results", I don't think an online leaderboard is valid. I think you'd have to look at whether the actual PGA Tournament rules consider a withdrawal after making a cut to be a lower finish than missing the cut...

Betting-wise, it appears that making a cut and withdrawing is considered higher finish than missing the cut. https://www.actionnetwork.com/golf/betting-rules-withdraw-disqualified

Your golfer withdraws from a tournament, for injury or any other reason. How will a sportsbook grade your bet?

Here are the general rules of thumb and how most major United States books handle things, but always check your specific book for rules.

FanDuel, for example, requires players to play three holes for bets to stand. Otherwise, bets will be refunded. Most other books will keep your money if the player has teed off, but refund you if they withdraw before teeing off.

  • If a player withdraws before the tournament, all bets will be void and your money will be refunded.
  • If a player withdraws during Round 1 or Round 2, you’ll lose all bets in most cases. That includes outrights, finishing position bets like top 20s, and matchups. A withdrawal in Round 1 or 2 will count as a missed cut.
  • If you bet a matchup and the player you bet against withdraws, you will win your bet as long as your golfer continues playing.
  • If a player withdraws in Round 3 or 4 but has already made the cut, the made cut bet will stand. Matchups in which the other player did not make the cut will also stand. But if both players are still playing, your bet will be a loser.

That's not a definitive "rule", but it's how sportsbooks handle it...

I go with the guy who took SS.  However, I would think that if they just scraped the bet with nothing changing hands. That would be a fair solution.

then that’s the way this “bet” should be settled, I guess.

It’s a tough one though, they’re probably better served calling off the bet.

Simple - in a matchup bet at a sports book; whoever completed the most holes wins.

*EDIT* And that was already answered.

No chance of them calling of the bet. Not how these guys work. It isn’t money more a pride thing. Thanks for reponses.

Now I'm more interested in the guys that made the bet. One of these guys doesn't sound very bright or can't admit he lost. Hmm reminds me of someone 🤔

Tiger made cut and got a check.  The end.

That was how I was going to answer it so I went looking for the payout but no Tiger on the list.  https://www.golfdigest.com/story/pga-championship-2022-here-is-the-prize-money-payout-for-each-golfer-at-southern-hills

Guess you don't get paid if you WD even if you make the cut?

Tour rookie Ferrie, tied for 20th place at the tournament’s halfway point, pulled out after vomiting while preparing for his teeoff in Saturday’s third round at Waialae Country Club.

Although he had made the cut by four shots after shooting 66 and 70, he is barred from earning official prize money and FedExCup points in line with PGA Tour policy.

“Any professional who is disqualified or withdraws for any reason from an official money tournament after making the cut shall be paid last-place, unofficial prize money as determined by the final cut the player made,” the regulations state.

This is the one guys point. The WD is essentially last place even though he made the cut. He doesn’t deny tiger okayed better through Friday and was leading but contends that a WD ranks below a missed cut.  Actually an interesting question in some ways.

The guy who bet Scheff should pay or the guy who bet TW should take his TV 📺 🤣

TW shot a better score for the rounds they both played. He beat Scheff. If they had bet each other, you think Scheff would be sayin,

I won! ; )

Unless they specifically phrased the bet as "Which one will be shown higher on the leaderboard at the end of the tournament", the guy who bet on Tiger wins.

He beat Scottie in every way other than the one technicality of how does the leaderboard ranking treat missed cut vs. WD.

Tell the guy who bet on Scottie he's a punk!  Pay up deadbeat!!!

Woods won because he made the cut and SS missed the cut.  Tiger is last among the players who made the cut.  SS is behind anyone who made the cut period.  This isn't even debatable.  Sounds like 1 party is trying to get out of not paying  Not cool.  In Poker also called trying to play an "angle".
