Eureka moment re flop shots

Recommended Posts

Always known to open the face, sometimes great results, sometimes meh, never really awful so didn't work on it much (bigger fish to fry).

Big revelation was how to use the extra loft. Answer was lowering the handle and making the whole club flatter. That plus using the bounce for more lies was really effective.

I can't say I understand why lowering the handle works, but it does.

Counteracts opening face.    Simple ways to think about it Is keeps face pointing down target line.   No need to open stance to swing out to in that brings the hosel into play.

Having trouble visualizing it. It definitely seems to straighten it out for lack of a better way of putting it.

This guy told me among other adjustments to hit the high flop in his scrambling video

It's also a good way to hit bunker shots.  Check out Tom Pernice's setup for bunker shots.

This is a lie dependent technique (as is everything short game) but for the most part a good idea!

Don’t torture yourself.  It’s not a shot that can be taught really.  If you can’t naturally feel how to do it.  And In practice it’s a good tool maybe once every 50 rounds or so.  Just doesn’t come into play often.

Lowing the handle means you squat down right, which means you flatten out the swing plane alot.

Which means you can swing even shallower.

I think the shallowing is more important than "counteracting the face"... You can simply aim left to do that.

Lowering the handle steepens the angle of attack.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Part of me agrees.  For me.  But if it were so easy for all , you wouldn’t get these dissections.  I didn’t learn to hit it by dissecting it.  I just decided to hit it one day.  By the end of that practice session I figured it out.  It’s all feel to me. I’ve  come to know that isn’t how it works for all or most.

i just feel like the guy who has to dissect it. Probably will hurt himself more than help himself.    But I’m absolutely open to being wrong on that too.

I’m the same way, I need to figure things out in my own and couldn’t afford lessons but I’ve always been like that but that being said short game is my strength and pains me to see people suck at chipping which is almost everyone you encounter in the course so if they’re willing I’ll show them and most people get it but there are some that just don’t. So I guess both can be true!

With flop shots you must follow through and not be tentative, otherwise it is chunk or skull city.

I'm really comfortable flopping it out of a fluffy lie. Much easier to complete the swing.

The tight lor flop almost isn't worth it, given the risk of ruin. It's like you've got to pinch it so cleanly to get even a modest result vs 1⁰ off and you blade it or it flies off to the side.

Not if you use the bounce correctly
