Your best driver ever.

In order of appearance...

1. Cally Warbird 11°, original M-10 steel. Those shafts were money.

2. 975D 9.5°, Harrison Boron Tour X. Very solid combo.

3. My current set-up, XTD Pro 10.5°, TP 65X. I've only got a couple of rounds with it so far, but this head is like cheating. An absolute canon, and almost impossible to miss big, left or right.

Hopefully I didn't already respond to this with another driver. :)

The problem with drivers is that they are kind of like girlfriends to me. I can remember those great drives like all the good times with the GF. There's a reason why both are no longer around though.

That being said, my current driver is the best for me. I had the original R7 Quad, nonTP and never hit a driver better. I moved up to "bigger and better" after joining these internet forums. I got a little out of control and had about 30-40 drivers in 2 years with every shaft combo imaginable. Then, while dropping off a Hibore XL tour to be shafted with WB 73S and an FTi to get a Creation, I found this QuadTP with a Speeder757 on the used rack. Had a green sticker on it, 30% off. Some quick math told me that was $70?? For real? I snapped it up with intentions of reselling it. I even had it on a classifed section of another forum. Thankfully I held on to it. The FTi and Hibore came back and got eaten alive by the QuadTP. Not even a contest. Since then it's produced the longest drives I've had on all the driver holes at every local course. So after all those drivers, the stars finally aligned... I got lucky and found a combo is so close to optimal for my swing I think a tour van would have a hard time building something better for me. I suppose I could have saved about $8000 by getting fitted in the first place, lol. Realistically though, I'm well ahead of the game $$ wise with clubhoing.

Titleist 905r 9.5* 44.5" TOUR ISSUE with Diamana BB 83X.

The story - I went to my local golf shop to chat with my buddy, who's like, "Dude, you've got to see this." Jerry Kelly had dropped off this driver because he wasn't going to be using it and wanted to do the store owner a favor...

I demoed and immediately after the first drive, I pulled the trigger.

Of course, after over-analyzing and reading too much online, I decided that my swingspeed wasn't up for an X-flex. So I ended up selling it on GOLFWRX - some lucky someone got my best/favorite driver ever.

Best one for me is one in the bag now. TM R7 425 9.5* with a Diamana Blueboard 63g. The TM Quad was pretty close and still in the garage. I've not found any of the newer models to be any better for me.

I did have a Callaway Great Big Bertha with an AJ Tech shaft that I could hit on a rope every time, but it would almost backup on landing it had so much spin! That was my first hi end shaft and loved it!

Here's my all-time favorite drivers from earliest to current:

Titleist Persimmon w/ steel shaft / burgundy head - beautiful

Wood Bros. Kool Kat Persimmon - first graphite shafted driver

Cleveland QuadPro steel head w/ EI-70

Titleist 983K with Graphite Design CP-02

TM R510 TP w/ Fuji 671 (still have it)

Bridgestone J33R w/ Fuji Rombax 7V05

My favorite driver was my TM 580XD with the orange fujikura shaft in it. It was the longest straightest driver i've ever hit. I gave it to my buddy and went and bought a Ping G5, which was recently sold and a TM R7 460 was purchased...got my long straight tee shots back now! Seems like any TM head and Fuji shaft combo is gold for me.

No contest, a gorgeous Hogan Apex persimmon driver that my parents bought as part of a 1-3-4 set for a college graduation present in the '80s. That driver had quite a debut, first struck on the first tee at Pebble Beach about 10 days later at 6:30 AM. That one was low in the left rough but I knew instantly I loved the club. Later that day it was striped within feet of the edge into the fog on #8, then set up a birdie on #18 by splitting left center past the tree.

My most memorable drives were with that club, including over the water on #7 at Biltmore in Coral Gables. Yeah, the wind was behind me, for anyone familiar with that hole. But still quite a poke.

Sigh. That set of woods and all my teenage Haig Ultras were lost a few years later, during a move from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

Frankly, I don't know how non-persimmon drivers qualify for a category like this. Current stuff is just a thunk. You might as well ask what is my favorite can of WD-40.

I agree with that, great assessment! You remember the good times and forget the not so good. For me my favorite club ever was a FT-3 Tour 9.5* with Speeder 757 X. Unfortunatly I busted the shaft. Bought another one exact same specs but it's just not the same. :) Proir to that I really loved my GBB 9* with Prolite 65. Use to hit serious bombs with that club back in HS days.

  • 2 weeks later...

Yonex ADX 300. Graphite head, dull sound on contact. No loft listed on the club, I'd say it played at least 10.5*, maybe even 12*. Only driver I have been able to hit every fairway with in a round (several times). I would still be playing it if it wasn't for the fact it is probably 20-30 yards shorter than the Nike SQ I am hitting now.

A Stratton Persimmon - maple finish with a green insert out of a bin at some course in Long Beach, CA while on a business trip in late 1970's.- awsome club. Great feel and the confidence it gave me was like a dream. Could not wait to tee it up. THEN about 15 years ago, like a complete idiot, I listened to someone who claimed to know everything. Talked me into putting in a Loomis graphite shaft and having it refinished because of a slight chip in th finish. The shaft did not work, the finish looks like a stain with a bit of an orange tint to it and on the toe it looks as if it soaked for a month in stain. Totally ruined it. Still have it, but cry whenever I see it. STUPID!!

In titanium era a Titleist 905 with a 5.5 Rifle steel shaft, 10 degree. Awsome flight and consistency.

Time for bonehead move #2. I let a guy try it - he loved it - threw $150 bucks at me and said bye. Never saw him or the club again.
