Match or Medal

Do you guys play match or medal games? My group loves to play match play amongst the foursomes. We have a $30 buy-in. Two low nets of four, wolf plus 1 low net, etc..

 

I hate it as a plus because the scores get into the high teens (-17, -19 lol). Everyone likes to say handicaps are handicaps, and that I get paid more skins so it evens out. Blah Blah. I proposed this summer everything is medal (team and individual) play.

 

Get rid of the skin pool to pay the 1-2 low individual nets and even concede at max at net double. Essentially playing golf by the rules, and of course getting push back. Suddenly handicaps aren't fair lol.

 

Obviously getting push back as no one likes to play real golf anymore.

Match play exclusively.  We have too much other stuff going on in our lives to grind over a 4' putt for triple.

 

I am not insinuating anything, but I do find that at our club the low caps are lower than they probably should be, and the higher caps are higher than they should be.   I probably have a vanity handicap that is .5 lower than it should be, I am a 5.3 right now.  I will play the guys who are a "2" any day of the week.  The 5-man-wolf group has not putted anything inside 10' for years.  I get smoked by the guys who are "15".  Partner and I played in our fourball 2 weeks ago and we were giving 13 strokes to a guy who shot 38 on the front.  We pushed the back but were 5 down after 9.

If you're talking actual stroke play with no limit on how many strokes a hole can take, I'd take a hard pass on that game. Then you get guys wanting to hit provisionals every time they lose sight of their ball on a tee shot, guys having to walk back to the tee if they can't find one, someone grinding over their third putt for 9 on a Par 4, etc. No thanks, that's fine for the guys that play on TV but it's brutal for handicap golfers on a crowded course.

 

If you want to play something "against the field" it has to be Stableford or similar points games with a NDB or similar limit on hole scores. 

 

Sounds like your objection is more to the skins than to match play. But I can't quite follow where the match play figures in to your regular games. Sounds like one of those deals where at any moment you're actually playing in half a dozen different games against various opponents or something. Too complicated.
