Golfweek Best You Can Play - Tennessee

I'm really not sure what it is about Stonehenge that would cause it to be rated that high. I've played it several times on golf trips and we always come away pretty underwhelmed by the layout. The 3-4 holes that play around the lake are sort of special but there are about 6-7 holes that are just simple doglegs with no outstanding features.

I do enjoy Heatherhurst Brae and would choose to play it over Stonehenge most days.

Sewanee is one of my favorite places and courses so I think that rating is justified. I prefer it to Sweeten's but can understand why they aren't ranked in my preferred order.

I haven't played Hermitage or Greystone.

I am going to have some time on my hands in the next three weeks or so.  I was looking for flights last night from bna to clt and rdu to do Pinehurst.  I almost have it in my mind to give the Fairfield Glade courses a go and save money doing so over Pinehurst area.  No, the golf will not be on par I am sure but no flight will probably be worth it.  I have driven to Southern Pines before and can do without that trip in a car.

I have spent many golf weekends at Fairfield Glade. There are about 4 18 hole layouts in the development or the surrounding area that are always well-conditioned and have a real championship layout. There are also about 4 courses that are lacking in some way, whether it's conditioning or length or whatever.

The good:

Stonehenge

Heatherhurst Brae

Bear Trace at Cumberland Mountain

Lake Tansi

The decent:

Dorchester

Druid Hills

The bad:

River Run

Heatherhurst Crag

The atmosphere is totally different than a place like Pinehurst. Each course is located in a different neighborhood within the development and there's no central lodge, clubhouse, bar or gathering area like you might have at Pinehurst or Bandon or Streamsong. You're not likely to meet anyone unless you get paired up to play with them.

We book through Bertram Realty and they schedule tee times and put you in their rental condos. It's very affordable. There are also a few 2-star hotels nearby.

FWIW Bertram can also book packages in the Tellico Village area South of Knoxville. The overall feel there is slightly more high-end. There are three good courses at Tellico plus TN National and Rarity Bay very nearby.

We have done the same trip regularly at Crossville for years. River Run used to be such a good value but the last few times we have been there, it has been terrible. I do enjoy both Heatherhurst courses but totally agree with you on Stonehenge, completely overrated and always soggy.

Going on a guys' trip to Fairfield Glade again this weekend. Not my favorite but I enjoy all the guys and we always have a good competition going so the courses are somewhat secondary.

This trip we're playing:

Dorchester

Druid Hills

Heatherhurst Brae

Lake Tansi
