How did you get into golf?

Grandparents lived in ft worth area. I visited most summers. Grandfather was retired military and worked at Bell Helicopter. He went in early and got off early. They lived very close to the air force base so he got to play for cheap all he wanted. I was 11 or 12 and he took me to play about 3 times a week. I took his northwestern clubs home with me and kept at it off and on. The summer I was 13, I was on the course as early as I could be there and left when my step-dad got off work. I usually walked 36 holes a day all summer in south FL.

My family was very lower middle class.   One of my friends as a kid, we played baseball together, had been to the golf course with his brother.   One day, he asked if I wanted to go.  We went to a cheap par 3 course and I used his clubs.  I hit one about ten feet away from the hole on my first swing.  It was a five iron on an 80 yard hole.  I was 9.  I then proceeded to three putt.

 

I saved up my paper route money to buy a cheap Northwestern starter set with actual wooden woods and blade irons in 3,5,7 and 9 irons and a bullseye putter.  A cheap bag from a neighbor's garage sale and I've been playing ever since.  That kid I played with and I are still good friends and still try to play a round or two together every year.  We are in our late 40s now.

 

I didn't have many friends growing up so at my local course, I played with a lot of old guys.  I related to them better.  I loved it when these 60+ year old guys would play 18 with me and be dishing out life advice the entire time.  Now, I've been to some of their funerals and told the family stories about their dad/grandpa playing golf and talking with 15 year old me.  I miss those guys.

randomly went out with my dad and his buddies one day, never stopped. used right handed clubs my first year until my parents could find left handed for my bday

I quit motorsports because it was expensive, time consuming, and dangerous. So I replaced it with golf, which is just expensive and time consuming

was 10. hit my dads Cleveland driver ripping it 200 yards. father devoted me into golf that day; but he’s broke. used used clubs never had a fitting to this day. moved me to FL junior year and made Varsity at a state champ school. averaged high seventies, father couldn’t pay for tourneys so had to quit. Followed ex gf to uni, then got into drugs. Haven’t played consistent tourney golf Bc of work and education. now I’m a plus handicap, 120 ss, 26 and still broke. Fathers still broke too lol. Mom cheated as well lol

And can also be quite dangerous depending on who you play with.
