Looking for a hidden gem (public)

I live in lower Fairfield County CT and am looking for a fun track to play within a day's drive. I have a classic car that needs stretch it's legs a bit. Why not give it a rest while enjoying a round of golf? Thanks!

Have you played Yale, Great River, Fairview Farms, Lake of Isles (north and south)? Those are public and all pretty fun tracks. If you're willing to call and ask you can try getting on Bulls Bridge in Kent, last I knew they were occasionally doing unaccompanied guests, but I think charging $400. That would be the nicest drive you could take in a classic car for sure.

Richter Park in Danbury is a great layout. Played there Easter afternoon, condition wasn't very good, but I expect them to get it in top shape.

Ballyowen, Crystal Lake, Wild Turkey, Mansion Ridge, Heron Glen, Nashanic Valley. Lots to choose from in NJ. Then there's the Ranch, Crumpin Fox, Newport National (both a long drive)...

Or, if you want some scenery om the drive take a ferry (or go around through NY) and go play Islands End, Montaup, Cherry Creek.

You're in a good spot for all those.

Thanks for the replies. Of that list I'll look into Bulls Bridge and The Ranch- the rest I've played except for the NY courses. I'm not interested in driving I95 or taking the ferry.  Thanks again for the replies and keep them coming...

Another vote for Richter Park - very cool layout.  No houses on the course which is awesome.  Beautiful piece of property.

3.5 hour one way trip for 9 holes. If you're on cape ANYWAY it's 100% a must do. But if you're coming from CT I wouldn't day trip that.

Pound Ridge, Pete Dye, expensive early, great track / conditions.  Cart path only right now, fyi.  
 

Ridgefield in Fall (foliage). Solid layout, decent (not great) condition.  
 

bull bridge is sweet and $$$$.

Keney Park in Hartford and Connecticut National in Putnam are the two best public courses in the state.

 

Do a 27-hole day with Shennecossett and Fenwick.

 

Another 27-hole day: go straight up through the Litchfield Hills to play the Hotchkiss School golf course and then continue north and west to Copake CC.

 

Orchard Creek in Altamont, NY would be fun in the fall, especially if the foliage is good. Also up that way is the Links at Union Vale, which I've not played but I have it on good authority that it's a fun place.

Played shenny again on Saturday. Those greens were dastardly this weekend. Barely eeked out a 79.... with 36 putts!!!

Was just at the Links at Union Vale yesterday and it's in fantastic shape (like always) and well worth the trip if you're anywhere nearby.
