Fitzpatrick Sheffield roots

we’re now in the UK and have talked with a number of people from Sheffield, many his age.  Just wanted to post that his very humble plain speak is rooted in the Sheffield culture.  For my money there are few more interesting informative and entertaining golfers than those from the UK.

 

I really like Zalatoris’ very humble allroach too and would have liked either one as the us open champ but there’s something special about Fitzpatrick that will shine brighter and longer than most think.

I love Sheffield. Had a girlfriend there back in the 80's, I was smitten at the time, had weekend leave from the Navy starting at 1200 on Saturday, would ride up to Sheffield on my 250cc bike, spend the night and back to the ship Sunday night..round trip of 550 miles... 

 

Got friends who live there so still a special place for me...

 

There you go, nothing to do with golf but hey ho....

that sounds like quite the time ... england on a bike, with a cherry on top, or vice-versa ... not a bad way to live for a few years ...

Watched Matt as a junior. Sight of build but superb striker and course management. He is grounded, polite and had to be ribbed into swapping his Mondeo for an M3 after his first tour win.

I quite like Sheffield. I used to live near Alfreton would often go up on the train for a night out.

 

At least its not Leeds.

Did you ever play golf while you were there? I played once or twice on a course that had some ties to the university, but I can't remember the name. I *think* it was Hallamshire, where FitzPatrick played, but it's been a long time and my memory is foggy.

All I remember was that you needed a car to get there, and as I didn't have one, I pretty much stopped playing golf while I was at uni.

I think you’ve got the two cities confused.

Scandinavians, first and foremost scandinavians with some age, that remember the semi-bolshevik times when we only had 2 channels on TV and all sport interested people watched British football, will recongize Sheffield as the town that has a football team named Wednesday.

(I have no clue of who is playing in Premier league now save maybe Salah, but I think I can name the Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal rosters from about 1980...)

Side note : Matthew Fitzpatrick is a name that craves to be pronounced in Oxford English... He does also a little look like someone that would fit in a TV serie in 30´s Eton environment. Its like every time I see him in front of a microphonen and he don´t answer something like "oh, rather" I get slightly disappointed.  Now that he has beefed up its not so much so.

If you want to wind-up/ annoy Matthew Fitzpatrick (as a challenge, i.e. he seems quite unperturbed / easygoing) 

...  would he be more annoyed if you asked him about Sheffield Wednesday, or Leeds United? (given he's a Sheffield United 'Blades' fan)?

I think Hallamshire is the best in the area; top 100 in England.  As a graduate student with no wheels my golf experiences were next to nil.   no car = no golf.   Home | Hallamshire Golf Club
