Help creating wedge shafts - spinner trick - but limited availability to shaft options

Hi everyone

I live in South Africa, and have limited "easy" availability of some of the more rare shaft options, like Tour X-stiff options, and .370 options.  I play X100 TI shafts in my irons, so to do the 8i spinner wedge shaft, I would have to use a DG X7 8i shaft, however I cannot find them at all in SA.  Other issue is my wedges have .370 hosels, which the DG don't come with, and the Brass Shims HJ recommended to me, I cannot get without importing them, which I don't really want to do.

What are my options?

PX 7.0 with a .370 tip, 8i soft stepped twice? 6.7FCM

PX 6.5 with .370 tip, 9i soft stepped once? 6.6FCM

PX 6.0 with .370 tip, wedge length straight in? 6.5FCM

All seem to get close to X100 which has 6,8FCM

X100 9i shaft, tip trimmed what I can for a bit more stiffness, and fitted with brass shims to fit into .370 hosel? (9i shaft is stiffer than 8i, then tip trimmed to get closer to X7 stiffness - would this be close?) seems to be about 6.8FCM from my amateur calcs if tip trimmed 3/8".  (Could I still fit a shim after tip trimming?)

What other shafts come in a Tour X-stiff, and have .370 tips?

Also what shafts with .370 or in Tour X, play similar to an X7 or X100 in terms of feel etc?  I have played PX before, and don't mind them -but they are different, so ideally something that played similar to the X100 I have.

Thanks!

JJ

you can tip the x100 1/2" since you have 0.370 hosels.  I tipped mine 3/8" so I didn't have to ream the hosel to 0.370 from 0.355.  not sure on the fit, you may still have to shim.

We cant think in terms of CPMs and mix 2 shaft models like that, then we wont get a shaft that fits the slot of a dedicated GW. With 0.370 hosel, you dont need bras shims if you tip trim them. The first /lowest taper part of the shaft is only 6/8" long, and at that point we expect them to be 0.370. Standard OD at the top of hosel (1.25") is expected to be 0.371 before we prep the shaft tip for epoxy by grinding the on the chrome plating. For DG X100, we can on most cases tip trim 1.25" (equal to 2 constant wgt shafts stiffer", so a DG X100 #9, tip trimmed 5/8" = X100 PW, and DG X100 #9 tip trimmed 1.25" = DG X100 GW (or spinner if you like) Measure your shafts 2.5 up from the tip (top of hosel plus 1.25". That point will be the "new top of the hosel" if you tip trim 2 clubs stronger or 1.25" . PS DONT buy the Tour issue #9 iron shafts, they are 129.5 to 130.5 grams. Buy standard GOLD sorting, thats where you will find shafts up to 131.5 grams. We go descending wgt into wedges if we like it or not, since we cut the same shaft "blank/#9" shorter and shorter with 1/4" of the shafts weight as grams pr inch. #9 to LOB in Dynamic Gold X100 = almost 5.0 grams lower shaft wgt for the lob wedge vs the #9. Thats why we want a higher start weight for wedges, we loose it if we like it or not, so to keep wedge shafts in the same area as irons, count them as a need for 0.9-1.0 grams UP in shaft wgt for each wedge shorter. Example the officially 2 grams up to DGS400 is "lost" already at the GW, and Sand and Lob wedge with DGS400 would have a lower net cut wgt than a X100 #9 iron. Thats why you should buy the GOLD version, since thats where they put the X100 with higher wgt than "Tour issue model limits".

Thanks Howard.  You are really helpful!

So to rephrase for my clarity, you suggest:

Buy a regular X100 9i (not T issue) - this is the shortest they offer anyway right?  37"?

Tip trim it 1,25" (31,75mm), fit straight in for GW

Tip trim 1,25" and butt trim 0,25" for SW

Tip trim 1,25" and butt trim 0,5" for LW

This will give the "spinner" trick, and allow me to fit them straight into the .370 hosels?

If I am following correctly, this is certainly a favourable one for me.  The X100 standard gold are very reasonable in price here since they are sold standard at golf shops.

Thanks Howard!

Howard I am really struggling to find stock of even an X100 37" shaft.  We seem to have very low availability in South Africa.  X100 TI I can find - but they are too expensive! I cannot find stock X100 shafts.

What I can find and are available:

X100 - 38,5" and 39" (6i and 5i?)

S300 - 36" (yes the online system says they have 36"??), 37", 37,5" and all the way up

Have you heard of a DG S300 36"?  It is an inch shorter than the 37", so maybe stiffer then?

I would be happy to concede and have slightly less stiff wedge shafts than my irons, I do 95% of the time hit a max of a 3/quarter swing with wedges.  Full swing very rare.  I am more after the weight, and closer to my irons (X100 TI).  Currently the wedges have Apollo Ballistik - they are too light for me, and too whippy.  The manufacturer told me they are 100g only.  The wedges take .370 shafts, so you had originally mentioned tipping the .355 shafts until they have a new diameter of .371/.370.

Any advice given the above?

There is no 36.00" S300 shaft today, but more than 20 years ago it was, but you will have to look at tip length (tip to first step), to know what it is. Those X100 shafts seems useless

and if I go with s300 37", tip it 1,25" or so that it fits the .370 hosel, I will be playing about a half to a full flex weaker than my X100 in the irons, but with a similar profile of flight/spin etc?

DGS and DGX is 2 different profiles, and we cant modify one of them to become like the other, thats not possible. A DGS #9 tipped 1.25" will fit the slot of a dedicated DGS GW shaft, so would a DG X100 #8 iron shaft, but this 2 options is not the same, even if over all flex is very close.

Understood, thank you.  Tough here in SA.  Not many options
