Will Zalatoris - Mister 2nd place in majors!

Recommended Posts

Will is a 2nd place at St. Andrews away from completing the career grand slam of 2nds in majors, that Louis Oosthuizen is a proud member of.  Other players just in random that have that honor as well...

  • Jack Nicklaus (many multiples of 2nds at every single major)
  • Greg Norman
  • Craig Wood
  • Tom Watson
  • Arnold Palmer
  • Phil Mickelson

In case you were wondering, Tiger Woods never finished in 2nd place at the Open Championship.

Just for the record, this is really not a dig at Will for what he has accomplished in such a short amount of time.  I am very confident that Will will not only win a major, but multiple majors if he stays healthy over the course of what is a very young career.

His game is much better suited to play on tough courses where you are rewarded for ballstriking and steady play rather than the regular, run of the mill birdie fests that the PGA tour and Korn Ferry Tour run on a weekly basis. I am pulling for him. It would be amazing if he only won majors and never won PGA tour events...and I can see a world where that happens.

Not impressed.

Too many "costly mistakes" on the weekend inward nines.

Weak with the 3-metal.

He not a pull-away sort of player.

Seems to hang on for dear life.

Folds like a "cheap suit" under pressure and can't finish.

They have him listed as 6'-2" and 175 lbs - he is no more than 155.

I always felt this 2nd at a major thing was more derogatory until you actually win a major.  Until Phil finally broke through, it was always he choked or did he have the guts to finish it off.  So until Will actually wins a major, heck even wins a regular tour stop, I question if he is a closer.

Interesting footnote to all of this.  Jordan Spieth is a 2nd place at the US Open away from the career 2nd place grand slam as well.  Granted, I think he'd prefer to finish his career grand slam off at next year's PGA, but I have a feeling he just might end up like Arnold Palmer and wish he had won it at some time in his career, but could never pull it off.

Who among the younger (under 30) players does impress you?

Sheffler.  Putting stroke is rock solid. It’s just a natural thing.

i agree with Ferg.  I think he’s a great ballstriker.  But.  He sputters under pressure.  And my personal opinion is that it’s because putter for  him is such a “ maybe”.  Guys who don’t fear 5 footers don’t have that pressure on their wedge and approach game.

And I understand that because I lived it.  I once hit 17 GIR in a state level am event and 3 putted 6 of those greens. Shot 75.  That was the round that made me throw my hands up and decide “ I’ll learn a proper stroke or quit the game “.    It took almost two years for it to be natural.  But I did it.   There’s no reason on earth why a guy with his talent would have to figure 8 stroke a 4 foot putt with an armlock /claw combo.  Him and and Colin  M .   Both need to spend a month with tiger learning how to putt.  Then a couple seasons from  now whne it’s old hat.  Either could be dominant.  Either of their putting strokes on a player that good would be like Phil showing up with a sure strike wedge and a chipper. It’s shameful in my opinion.  And absolutely shows up in other parts of their  games.

im a fan of both  their swings.  I turn away when they putt.  It’s that ugly to me.  Like the guys. Just like Rory and his wedge deficiency .  That’s why I gripe about them wasting their talents.  Or maybe more accurately not reaching their potential.

Hovland and Burns

Are those the two under 30 players who impress you the most? I agree with Burns, not sold on Hovland's short game yet (but he does have the greatest smile on tour). There are better known, more accomplished guys still in their 20s we aren't mentioning. Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Collin Morikawa, Jon Rahm, even Matthew Fitzpatrick now.

Morikawa's problems are putting (126th) and Around the Greens (180th).
